Jazz Ensembles

The A-State Jazz Ensembles perform several concerts a semester while members of the A-State Jazz program frequently perform in small combos throughout the Jonesboro community.

Where Jazz Comes to Life

A-State Jazz Studies is a dynamic program featuring two jazz big bands, multiple jazz combos, and coursework in jazz history, theory, and improvisation. The ensembles perform several concerts each semester, with students also performing in small groups throughout the Jonesboro community. The program offers an annual Delta Jazz Workshop for high school students and a minor in Jazz Studies for those wishing to further their jazz education.

Jazz Orchestra

The A-State Jazz Orchestra is the premier jazz ensemble at Arkansas State University.  It uses a traditional big band instrumentation (saxophone, trumpets, trombones, rhythm section) and features the finest music major jazz musicians on campus.  While the ensemble occasionally visits the great standards of the jazz repertoire, the Jazz Orchestra is primarily heard playing the newest trends of the medium.

The group performs two on-campus concerts each semester and occasionally will travel for an outreach event or jazz competition. Dr. Lucas Kaspar directs the group which meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:00-1:50 p.m. during both the fall and spring semesters. Auditions are held the first week of classes for the fall and spring semester.

Lab Band

The A-State Lab Band is comprised of woodwind, brass, and rhythm section players including music majors and non-music majors from across the university.  The band plays a mix of standard and contemporary charts. The Lab Band typically uses standard Big Band instrumentation but may use altered instrumentation based on the needs of the group each semester.

The Lab Band is designed as a training ground for students to learn the jazz language and repertoire. The group has non-formal performance opportunities, such as performing at the Student Union and Farmers’ Market. Dr. Lucas Kaspar directs the group which meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2:00 - 2:50 p.m. during both the fall and spring semesters.
