What to Expect at New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation is an opportunity for incoming first-year students to learn more about A-State. During the day, students will meet other incoming students, discover campus activities and services, learn more about the resources available, tour campus, and have fun!

FIRST YEAR STUDENTS

New Student Orientation is required for incoming first-year students. NSO is designed to provide you with all the information you need to feel confident beginning your collegiate career at A-State, and the schedule will be customizable to allow you to complete the tasks you feel are most important on this day. Be sure to check your email prior to your scheduled session for full details.

SCHEDULE OF THE DAY

New Student Orientation provides multiple informational sessions for all attendees with the program beginning at 9 a.m. and typically running through the afternoon. Sessions at NSO include, but are not limited to: academic college sessions, parent session, student small groups, special interest sessions, campus department browsing session and a residence hall open house.

We invite students and their guests to dine with us in the Acansa Dining Hall during the designated lunch break at NSO. Other on-campus retail locations will be open throughout the day for your convenience.

Student service offices will also be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to assist students and guests during New Student Orientation. Offices include Access & Accommodations, Admissions, Wilson Counseling Center, Financial Aid & Scholarships, University Housing, the Campus Card Center and more.

ACADEMIC ADVISING

Prior to attending New Student Orientation, an academic advisor will contact incoming students to discuss Fall schedule planning. Be sure to share your academic major interest and notify the advisor of any college credit you have earned. This information will be helpful as the two of you work together to create your fall schedule. Schedules will be finalized at NSO.

PREPARING FOR YOUR NSO ADVISING SESSION

Be sure to have your AP and concurrent credits sent to A-State to become part of your official record before the Fall semester begins. You will want to have a list of these college credits available for your advising session. Your academic advisors will provide information about your degree plan in your advising session so that going forward, you will know which courses to select. Most first year schedules include General Education courses, as well as, a First Year Experience (FYE) course. Some students will also take introductory courses within their major. First Year Experience is a college success course required of all incoming students during their first semester. This course serves as an extended orientation and acquaints students with college resources, study skills, degree information and is coupled with campus activities.

Families and Guests

New Student Orientation is designed to help your student successfully join the A-State community. We know parents and families play a critical role in the success of our students. NSO is an informative and engaging day for parents and families to learn more about campus resources and ways to best support your student while at A-State. Whether this is your first college student or fifth, we invite you to participate in New Student Orientation to become familiar with support services available to you and your student. Parent/family attendance at NSO is encouraged but not mandatory.
