Dr. Nairam Simoes
Assistant Professor of Trumpet
Biography
Originally from Brazil, Dr. Nairam Simoes enjoys a multifaceted international career as a performer, music educator, and clinician with a wealth of knowledge particularly in chamber and Brazilian music. Currently he holds the position of Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Arkansas State University. Prior to his appointment at A-State, he served as trumpet faculty at Lamar University and Texas A&M-Kingsville. In addition to his teaching duties, he serves as the editor of the Orchestral Spotlight column for the International Trumpet Guild Journal.
As an active performer, he has played with the Arkansas Symphony, Memphis Symphony, Knoxville Symphony, Symphony of Southeast Texas, Dayton Philharmonic, Lexington Philharmonic, among others.
Dr. Simoes, outside of his work at the University, maintains his private studio and additionally gives master classes and lectures internationally while continuing to perform. He has presented masterclasses across the United States and in South America including the University of North Texas, Colorado State University, Utah University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Duquesne University, University of New Mexico, University of Campinas in São Paulo and many other institutions. He was a featured artist for the 2022 and 2021 International Trumpet Guild Conferences, faculty for the 2022 and 2023 University of Kentucky Summer Trumpet Institute, 2019 Brazilian Trumpet Conference, 35th Winter International Music Festival of Santa Maria, the 2021 and 2016 Campina Grande International Music Festival in Paraíba (Brazil) and presented a recital at the 2021 International Horn Symposium. He has adjudicated for TMEA, KMEA and WTSBOA. He has also served as chair of the Youth Division Competition for the 2022 ITG. In addition, Dr. Simoes has served as chair and judge to many divisions of the National Trumpet Competition.
Dr. Simoes has a vibrant trumpet program, with students competing at the National Trumpet Competition and the Arkansas State Trumpet Ensemble has been selected as a semi-finalist in the 2023 International Trumpet Guild's Chamber Music Division of the Ryan Anthony Memorial Trumpet Competition, held as part of the 2023 ITG Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. His students have been selected as one of top student chamber ensembles in the world to participate in these contests. A-State students have also performed at the International Trumpet Guild Conferences as Prelude Ensembles and at the Festival of Trumpets. Dr. Simoes’ students have gone on to study at prestigious graduate schools, to teach at outstanding high schools and to play professionally.
Dr. Simoes holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a. Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Memphis. He is honored to be an S.E. Shires Artist.
