A-State is a Top Producer of Fulbright U.S. Students

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University is included on the list of U.S. colleges and universities that produced the most 2017-2018 Fulbright students, as recently announced by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. Top-producing institutions are highlighted annually in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Three students from Arkansas State received Fulbright awards for academic year 2017-2018, a number predicted to rise.

"It is fantastic to see Arkansas State University listed as one of the 'high producers' of Fulbright student scholars in the country," Chancellor Kelly Damphousse recently said. "No pressure, Arkansas State University and our incoming Class of 2022, but I would love to double this in the next three years."

Last April, A-State seniors Desirae Green of Little Rock, Arnelle Jones of Osceola and Cameron Mealing of Jonesboro were announced as Fulbright Grant recipients for the 2017-18 year.  They are serving as English language teaching assistants in (respectively) Spain, Colombia and Senegal.

Jennifer Salo, competitive fellowships and scholarships coordinator, advises A-State students who apply for the Fulbright and other awards.  Interested students may contact her, jsalo@AState.edu, or visit her office, room 2016 of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building.

Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 380,000 participants — chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.  The Fulbright U.S. Student Program operates in over 140 countries.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State, funded by an annual appropriation from the U.S. Congress to the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and supported in its implementation by the Institute of International Education.

The Fulbright Program also awards grants to U.S. scholars, teachers and faculty to conduct research and teach overseas. In addition, some 4,000 foreign Fulbright students and scholars come to the United States annually to study, lecture, conduct research and teach foreign languages.
