Heritage Studies

The Department of Heritage Studies is where memory and meaning come together. Rooted in the rich cultural landscape of the Mississippi River Delta, this interdisciplinary program explores how history, literature, folklore, geography, and the environment shape communities and identities. Here, you'll gain the tools to interpret and preserve the stories that define regions.

Our Program

Our mission is to produce heritage professionals with the knowledge and expertise needed to identify, assess, preserve, interpret, manage, and promote historic and cultural resources for non-specialist or "public" audiences. Students develop traditional doctoral-level research skills, but as heritage professionals, their expertise will be applied, practical, public dissemination of history and culture.

Assistantships

Heritage Studies Ph.D. Program currently has twelve full-time graduate assistants. Stipend awards are competitive, and additional assistantships may become available in future semesters.

To be eligible for a full-time graduate assistantship, students must meet the following requirements:

Be enrolled in at least nine graduate credit hours during a full semester term.
Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA.
Be accepted unconditionally into the degree program.
Not be employed by another A-State unit or receive a second concurrent A-State paycheck.
Tuition fellowship applies to all full-time graduate assistants.
