Instructor of Trumpet


Biography

Sam Oliveri is currently an adjunct instructor of trumpet at Arkansas State University.  At Arkansas State Sam teaches applied trumpet lessons, trumpet methods, trumpet pedagogy, and performs with the faculty brass quintet.  Prior to coming to Arkansas State, Sam was a doctoral teaching assistant in the trumpet studio at the University of Kentucky (UK).

Pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts in Trumpet Performance and a Certificate in Baroque Trumpet, Sam began his studies at UK in the fall of 2018.  At UK, Sam taught applied trumpet lessons to classical and jazz students, trumpet methods, and assisted in the coaching of the UK Trumpet Ensemble.  Before coming to UK, Sam earned his Master of Music in Trumpet Performance along with a Performers Certificate from Northern Illinois University (NIU), and his Bachelor of Musical Arts from DePauw University (DPU).

As a freelancer in the Chicagoland area, Sam enjoyed an active performance and teaching schedule.  Holding positions as 3rd trumpet/ auxiliary in the DuPage Symphony Orchestra, 2nd trumpet in the Salt Creek Chamber Orchestra, and 2nd trumpet in the Dekalb Municipal Band; Sam also performed with a number of ensembles including the Chicago Metropolitan Brass Ensemble, Wheaton Municipal Band, and North West Festival Orchestra.  In addition to performing, Sam also served as the high brass instructor at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School, while maintaining a private studio teaching students of all ages. 

Sam’s research interests are focused on the psychology of trumpet performance and he is currently conducting a research study on these interactions as part of his dissertation “Trumpeting Through Trials and Tribulations: The Effects of Grit, Mindset, and Achievement Goal Orientation on Performance Anxiety”.  In the summer of 2021 Sam gave two presentations on this topic at the International Trumpet Guild Conference as a part of the Young Professionals Series, and the ITG Research Room.  Sam currently serves as the inaugural Chair of Active Dissertations for the International Trumpet Guild. 

Sam’s primary teachers include Dr. Jason Dovel (UK), Dr. Mark Ponzo (NIU), and Leonard Foy (DPU).  Other influential teachers include Rob Parton, Thomas Drake, Jan Roller, and Mary Weber.
