University Community Extends Sympathy to John L. Burns Family

JONESBORO -- The university community extends sympathy to the family, friends and former colleagues of Dr. John L. Burns of Jonesboro, who died Jan. 11. The tower of the Dean B. Ellis Library will be lighted scarlet Tuesday evening, Jan. 18, as a memorial tribute to him.

Burns joined the faculty in the Department of Psychology and Counseling in 1969 and retired in 1994, at which time he was named emeritus professor of counselor education in recognition of his 25 years of service at A-State.

During the university's centennial celebration in 2009-10, Burns was recognized by Faculty Association as one of the First 100 Distinguished Faculty of the institution, based on his outstanding career achievements and contributions to Arkansas State University.

A Navy veteran, Burns earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Tennessee and his Ph. D. at the University of Texas.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha (Tommy) Strickland of Munford, Tenn., a son, Alan (Susan) Burns of Jonesboro, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His full obituary is online. Arrangements are by Emerson Funeral Home.
