Sympathy to the Family and Former Colleagues of Loretta Bookout, Emeritus Instructor

JONESBORO – The university community extends sympathy to the family, friends and former colleagues of Loretta Bookout of Jonesboro, who died Friday.

Mrs. Bookout earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Arkansas State University in early childhood education. After a career in which she helped to begin the Head Start program and was instrumental in launching the first public kindergarten in Jonesboro, she later founded a private kindergarten.

She joined the A-State faculty in 1987 and served for 10 years. At retirement, she was named emeritus instructor in elementary education.

Survivors include her children, Paul Bookout and Jill Rogers, and their families. The complete obituary is online.

The clock tower of the Dean B. Ellis Library will be lighted scarlet Thursday evening, Feb. 15, in memorial tribute to her for her service and contributions to the field of elementary education and Arkansas State University.
