A native of Forrest City, DeVazier enlisted in the Navy after high school.  Following his military service, he completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Central Arkansas, his master’s at the University of Memphis, and his doctoral degree at the University of Arkansas.

DeVazier joined the Arkansas State University faculty in 1967 and taught in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Sport Sciences for 24 years, retiring in 1991.
