Special Screening of Johnny Cash Documentary Scheduled

11/22/2022

JONESBORO – Dyess Colony Circle members are invited to attend a special screening of the documentary “Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon.” The event will take place on Thursday, Dec. 1, ahead of the limited release of the film which will be Dec. 5-7. The premiere will be shown at the Ron Robinson Theater in Little Rock.

“Kevin Kresse, sculptor of the Johnny Cash statue for the United States Capitol, will be in the lobby to visit with guests,” said Penny Toombs, director of Dyess Colony: Johnny Cash Boyhood Home and the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum. Both museums are part of the Arkansas State University Heritage Sites.

Tickets will be limited and are only available to Dyess Colony Circle members. Tickets will be given out on a first-come basis. Dyess Colony Circle members get various perks with membership including access to year-round benefits, discounts and priority on special events. Memberships begin at $35 annually.

“The director and producer of the film will have a behind-the-scenes talk, followed by a question-and-answer session immediately after the viewing,” said Toombs. The film will feature never-before-heard conversations with Cash and follows his "road to redemption."

Toombs said for those not able to make the special screening in Little Rock, the film will also have a limited run at the Malco Jonesboro Towne Cinema the following week.

This documentary takes a never before seen look at the life of Johnny Cash. Viewers will hear from those who knew him best as the tale of this lifelong journey and spiritual realization is told.

As described by WTA Media Productions, "this film covers a critical time in Cash's career. At the end of his rope, Johnny Cash stumbled into a cave and laid down in the dark. But death didn’t come calling; God did. 'Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon' is the untold story of how 'The Man in Black' saw the light."

In theaters only Dec. 5-7, Johnny Cash focuses on a critical period in the country music legend’s life and career when he went from singing hymns in the cotton fields to playing sold-out stadiums. At the mountaintop professionally, a cycle of depression and drug addiction left Cash in the lowest valley personally. Country music stars Marty Stuart, Wynonna Judd, Tim McGraw and many others share their insights into the life and legacy of the artist, man and friend.
