Scholarship Established to Honor Jonesboro Businessman Cary Matthews

JONESBORO – Friends, family and co-workers of Jonesboro native Cary C. Matthews are honoring his memory with the creation of an endowed scholarship in his name at Arkansas State University.The Cary C. Matthews Endowed Scholarship will be given once a year to an agricultural business or business administration student.

“My sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and I are so very humbled by the generosity of so many who have helped make the Cary C. Matthews Endowed Scholarship a reality,” said Julie Matthews, widow of Cary Matthews. 

An A-State graduate, Matthews was a big supporter of the university and very involved in the community.

In addition to his work as chief appraisal officer for Farm Credit Midsouth, Matthews was active in community service. He was a member of the Jonesboro Exchange Club, Investment Club, 1924 Member of the A-State Alumni Association and A-State Red Wolves Foundation.

“Cary had such a passion for family, agriculture, and agricultural appraisal and loved to share his passion with a true servant’s heart,” said Matthews.  

He had a successful professional career which included being the first person in the state to hold both an Accredited Rural Appraiser and Real Property Review Appraiser designation with the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. He was also on the Arkansas Appraiser Licensing and Certification Board and part of the Jonesboro Regional Chamber of Commerce Board.

“Cary would have been so honored by this endowed scholarship and on behalf of he, and our family, we thank those who have contributed and those who will continue to contribute to preserving Cary’s memory and passion for generations to come,” Matthews added.

She said her husband loved to spend time with his family at Norfork Lake and at their farm where he enjoyed hunting, boating and fishing.To qualify for the scholarship, students must be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior. Preference will be given to on-campus students, but the scholarship can be given to an online student.Students who show interest in agriculture, real estate, appraisals and farm management will be selected over other students. Students must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.
