10/24/2012

JONESBORO – Two Arkansas State University students were recently awarded scholarships by the Strong-Turner Alumni Chapter (S-TAC) of the ASU Alumni Association at its annual Homecoming Scholarship luncheon. The scholarship recipients are:

Marchelle Perkins, a senior art education major from West Memphis, received the Linual Cameron Scholarship for 2012-13. Jay Scurlock, grandson of Linual Cameron introduced and presented Perkins at the reception. After graduation she plans to teach art at a junior high or high school, as well as start an after-school program for inner-city youth to help them with homework, develop life skills, and provide an outlet of self-expression through art.

The Linual Cameron Memorial Scholarship is provided each year through an endowment established in 1989 by the Strong-Turner Alumni Chapter.  It was established in memory of Linual Cameron, who was vice president of finance at A-State for 24 years and was a strong supporter of African-American students at ASU, especially those who exhibited leadership potential and academic achievement.

James Hollywood III, a junior criminology major from Caruthersville, Mo., received the Strong-Turner Alumni Chapter (S-TAC)/Black Alumni Reunion (BAR) Scholarship for 2012-13.  Peggy Robinson Wright, S-TAC President, introduced and presented Hollywood at the reception. After graduation from Arkansas State, he plans to enroll at the University of Arkansas School of Law and then enlist in the U. S. National Guard.  The S-TAC Scholarship is provided each year through an endowment established in 2009 by the Strong-Turner Alumni Chapter.

Among the university representatives in attendance to honor the scholarship recipients were Dr. Chuck Welch, president of the ASU System, and Dr. Tim Hudson, chancellor of ASU-Jonesboro.
