Johnny Cash Boyhood Home: Eclipse Events and Arkansas Roots Music Festival
DYESS — Visitors to the Historic Dyess Colony: Johnny Cash Boyhood Home, an Arkansas State University Heritage Site, will experience a fun-filled series of events leading up to the eclipse. On Saturday, April 6, the Arkansas Roots Ride will begin at 9 a.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. “This supported ride will connect the Johnny Cash Boyhood Home and the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum. Participants will receive a t-shirt, lunch and admission to the Arkansas Roots Music Festival that afternoon,” said Penny Toombs, director of the Boyhood Home. The Arkansas Roots Music Festival, which is part of the Delta Symposium XXIX, will begin at the Boyhood Home at noon and will feature an afternoon of live music from Arkansas artists. Admission is $35. Food trucks will be available, and participants will be able to tour the Boyhood Home. Musical lineup includes: Nightwing, Posey Hill, Marty Ray Project, and Jason D. Williams. A lunch and learn will be held on Sunday, April 7, at noon featuring Dr. Les Johnson, a physicist, author and NASA space propulsion technologist and principal investigator, who will speak about the science of solar eclipses. Following the presentation, Johnson will be available for book signing. The Colony Administration Building and Visitors Center will be open for tours. Tickets are $15 and must be purchased in advance. Also, happening in Jonesboro, Johnson will give a presentation on Friday, April 5, at 1 p.m. in the auditorium of the Reng Student Union. This event is free and open to students, faculty and staff. “The partial eclipse will begin at Dyess at approximately 12:38 p.m. and will last two hours and 37 minutes. The eclipse will peak at 99.38% totality at approximately 1:57 p.m. Tailgating-style spots are available for a fee and include four pairs of Johnny Cash Boyhood Home eclipse glasses. Chemical toilets will be available, but participants should plan to provide their own food,” said Toombs. Tickets to the event can be purchased at DyessCash.AState.edu/eclipse.
An eclipse event will also be held at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center in Piggott.
