Fowler Center Announces 2016-17 Season of Presentations

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University’s Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Drive, announces the concert lineup for its 2016-17 season. 

The season, which begins Oct. 7, will include the Mobius Trio of guitarists, followed by the Denise Donatelli Quintet, led by the acclaimed jazz vocalist, on Oct. 21; Still on the Hill, a duo of Ozarks-based story-telling musicians, on Nov. 4; The Four Freshmen, a jazz vocal group, on Dec. 4; the Russian String Orchestra, on Feb. 11; Third Coast Percussion, a West Coast-based ensemble, on March 11; and An Evening with Dailey & Vincent, the bluegrass duo, on April 1.

The Riceland Distinguished Performance Series will feature four of the presentations: Mobius Trio, Four Freshmen, Russian String Orchestra, and Dailey & Vincent.

The Fowler Center will also present a "family friendly" event, MatheMagic!, sponsored by the Arkansas Science Festival, on Friday, Oct. 14.

Here are descriptions of the various presentations this season, summarized from the Fowler Center season booklet.

Mobius Trio
Friday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m.

Mobius Trio, formed in 2010 by guitarists Robert Nance, Mason Fish, and Matthew Holmes-Linder, has made it its mission to fully integrate the classical guitar into the 21st century’s musical lexicon.  The trio exclusively performs music that they have commissioned. This concert is sponsored by Occasions Publishing Group.

Mathemagic
Friday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m. & 7 p.m.

Magician and educator Bradley Fields captivates school-age audiences with his magic illusions.  His show promotes math skills and problem solving through visuals, history, language and world-class entertainment.  For over 20 years, teachers, math specialists and educators have given it their highest accolades.  This show is presented in collaboration with the Arkansas Science Festival. 

Denise Donatelli Quintet
Friday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m.

Denise Donatelli is a multi Grammy®-nominated jazz vocalist alternating between jazz and adult contemporary music.  Her last three recordings "Find a Heart (2015)," "Soul Shadows (2012)" and "When Lights are Low (2010)" have collectively received four Grammy® nominations.  The Los Angeles Jazz Society honored her with its 2012 Jazz Vocalist of the Year award.  Sodexo is the concert sponsor.

Still on the Hill
Friday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m.

Still on the Hill is a national and international touring group from Arkansas that has been described as “Ambassador of the Ozarks” for the work they do to preserve a rich culture that is quickly disappearing.  Kelly and Donna are award-winning storytelling song writers, embellishing their songs with a host of unique instruments from the hills they call home.  The Jonesboro Sun is the concert sponsor.

Four Freshmen, “A Fresh New Christmas”
Saturday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m.

In 1948, four young men created a sound that forever changed the way vocal jazz harmony was heard and performed.  Known as The Four Freshmen, the group began a sound that has endured for more than six decades.  Bob Ferreira, Curtis Calderon, Stein Malvey, and Tommy Boynton continue to captivate audiences with their harmonizing vocals and instrumentals.  The concert is sponsored by KAIT-TV.

Russian String Orchestra
Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.

Comprised of some of Russia's finest young string players, the Russian String Orchestra has carved a niche for itself under the creative baton of its founder and music director Misha Rachlevsky.  The group's warmth and high energy create addictive performances that stay with listeners.  Jonesboro Regional Chamber of Commerce is the concert sponsor.

Third Coast Percussion
Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.

Third Coast Percussion explores and expands the extraordinary sonic possibilities of the percussion repertoire, delivering exciting performances for audiences of all kinds.  Formed in 2005, Third Coast Percussion has developed an international reputation with concerts and recordings of inspiring energy and subtle nuance.  The sponsor of this concert is Posey Peddler.

An Evening with Dailey & Vincent
Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.

Dubbed by Country Music Television as the “Rockstars of Bluegrass,” the Dailey & Vincent duo has been hailed throughout the music industry as one of the most exciting, reputable and elite Bluegrass bands in America, having won numerous awards for their uniquely contagious and riveting music.  The sponsor is KASU, A-State's public broadcasting service.
