10/09/2023

JONESBORO – For those who have admired pottery and thought about making their own, the Department of Art + Design at Arkansas State University will offer a class this fall for the public.Dr. Temma Balducci, chair of the Department of Art + Design, said they have offered printmaking workshops for the community for several semesters, but this is their first time offering a pottery course.“We’ve had numerous community members inquire over the years about a pottery course,” said Balducci, who is also a professor of art history. She said the previous workshops were very successful and always fun for attendees.“With the opening of the new Windgate Center for Three-Dimensional Arts, we thought this would be a great time to welcome people into the space and give them an opportunity to learn or expand on skills, as well as meet some of our faculty,” continued Balducci. She said the six-week class is open to beginners and to those who would like to learn more. The sessions will be taught using demonstrations and hands-on practice.“Students will learn the fundamentals of wheel-throwing and hand-building, including but not limited to cylinders, bowls, jars, and plates. Students will also learn to evaluate form and how form serves the function of the vessel,” said Just Emerson, who is the instructor for the course. The cost for the class is $300 and will be held on Thursday nights beginning on Nov. 2, excluding Thanksgiving. The deadline to sign up is Oct. 26.She said they plan to offer more classes for the community and will also begin offering one-day workshops in the future including animation and screen printing for adults and children. To register for the class, one may visit RedWolv.es/CommunityPottery
