Darwin Day Events Planned; Focus on Evolution of Disease

JONESBORO – The Arkansas State University Department of Biological Sciences will host Darwin Day on Friday, Feb. 10, at 5 p.m. This event, which will highlight important topics related to evolutionary biology, is planned to coincide with the birthday of Charles Darwin, which is Feb. 12.

The theme for Darwin Day is “Evolution and Disease” and will feature a guest speaker.

“World-renowned expert Dr. Paul Ewald of the University of Louisville will give a presentation, ‘What Evolutionary Considerations Tell Us about the Future of COVID’,” said Dr. Drew Sweet, assistant professor of evolutionary biology.

Sweet said Ewald is a leading expert on the evolution of infectious diseases, having published many scientific articles and popular books on the topic.

The event will take place in the auditorium of the Reng Student Union, 101 N. Caraway Road. The public is invited to attend.
