Armistice Day Centennial Celebration is Scheduled for Sunday

JONESBORO – In honor of the centennial anniversary of Armistice Day, a “Celebration of Peace” will be held Sunday, Nov. 11, from 10-11 a.m. The event has been moved indoors to the main lobby of the Dean B. Ellis Library.

Dr. Edward Salo, assistant professor of history and historic preservationist at Arkansas State, is the featured speaker. He will talk about the gravity of World War I on national and local history.

The celebration includes an ROTC flag ceremony, followed by a welcome address from Arkansas State University Chancellor Kelly Damphousse. In addition, there are observances of service, history, music and ringing of the Bells of Peace.

The event is open to the public and parking is available on the south side of the library. Shuttle transportation will be available from the parking lot for those with mobility issues. Refreshments will be provided.

The Armistice of Nov. 11, 1918, was the agreement made between the Allies and Germany to end WWI. It was signed in the morning on the 11thhour of the 11th day of the 11th month in Paris to cease fighting on land, sea and air and marked victory for the Allies and defeat for Germany.
