Arkansas State Rugby Partners with Memphis Redbirds in Fundraiser
July 12, 2013
JONESBORO, Ark. — Arkansas State University’s rugby program is working with the Memphis
Redbirds baseball team on an interesting fundraiser that will aid the Red Wolves’
scholarship fund.
The Redbirds will play the Omaha Storm Chasers Aug. 17 and 18 in Memphis’ Autozone
Park, and five dollars from each ticket sold will go to the rugby scholarship fund.
Tickets must be purchased through former ASU rugby player Greg Rodrigue, who now works
for the Redbirds, the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League
Baseball. He was instrumental in developing the partnership between the baseball team
and ASU’s rugby program.
"I believe this is another gateway to promoting the sport of rugby by partnering with
a mainstream sport such as baseball," said Rodrigue. "These two nights are trying
to give back to the program that made me what I am today. We have to do a lot of fundraising
on our own throughout the year; this is basically giving us a jump-start and a potential
outlet to do this is the future. I am proud to create these two nights. It’s my way
of saying thank-you to my program."
“We are very excited and thankful to be partnering with a great organization in the
Memphis Redbirds for this fundraiser,” said second-year ASU Rugby Coach Alex Houser.
“It is a fantastic opportunity for our program and we all look forward to two great
nights of baseball in the Redbirds’ beautiful stadium right in the heart of downtown
Memphis.”
