Akeem Kemp Band to Open KASU Monster Groovez Concert Series

05/17/2021

JONESBORO — The Akeem Kemp Band returns to Newport, Tuesday, May 18, at 7 p.m. as part of the Monster Groovez Concert Series. The Monster Groovez Concerts are sponsored by Arkansas State University’s public media service KASU 91.9 FM and Arkansas Steel Associates as part of the Monster Nights Downtown Entertainment Series in Newport.

Akeem Kemp is an Arkansas guitarist, singer, and songwriter who cites bluesman Albert King as a major influence. His blues style also evokes Jimi Hendrix and classic rhythm and blues artists such as Sam Cooke and Al Green. Kemp and his band played a Monster Groovez Concert in 2019, and bring their music back to Front Street Park in Newport. More information about the Akeem Kemp Band is available at akeemkempmusic.com.

This concert will be the first of this year’s KASU/Arkansas Steel Associates Monster Groovez Concerts, presented at the Terry Scoggins Memorial Stage at Front Street Park, 412 Front Street in Newport. These concerts are held on the third Tuesday of each month in May and June. There will be no July concerts to avoid possible summer heat but the series will resume in August and September.

All concerts start at 7 p.m., and are free and open to the public. This is an outdoor venue that is child and pet friendly. Feel free to bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating. There is plenty of room for social distancing in the park. Masks are encouraged while walking through the park or interacting with other attendees.

KASU is the public media service of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, broadcasting at 91.9 FM and streaming live. For more information, contact KASU Station Manager Mark Smith at msmith@AState.edu or 870-972-2283.
