Agreement Creates Poultry Science Dual Degree Option

JONESBORO – Officials from Arkansas State University and the University of Arkansas met today to sign an agreement that creates a new dual degree option for A-State students who would like a degree in poultry science.

Dr. Doug Whitlock, chancellor, Dr. Lynita Cooksey, provost, and Dr. Tim Burcham, dean of the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Technology, met with Dr. Lona Robertson, interim dean of the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural Food and Life Sciences at UA, in the Administration Building lobby.

They signed a joint memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a "3+1" dual degree program in poultry science involving both institutions.

Essentially, an A-State student may complete the first three years of the animal science degree curriculum in the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Technology at the Jonesboro campus, then complete the fourth year in poultry science at the University of Arkansas, which has a well-established program in Fayetteville.

Each student who completes the 3+1 dual degree plan, which typically will take four years, will earn a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree with a major in animal science from A-State, and a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences degree with a major in poultry science, from UA.

The demand for poultry science graduates is increasing rapidly in Northeast Arkansas, where the poultry industry is growing rapidly at nearby plants in Pocahontas and Batesville.
