A-State Students, Faculty Gather for Annual Create@State Symposium

JONESBORO – Members of the Arkansas State University community filled the auditorium and Centennial Hall, of Reng Student Union for the annual Create@State Symposium of Research, Scholarship, and Creativity, where students showcased presentations. 

Each year, undergraduate and graduate students at A-State collaborate with professors and mentors to conduct research, culminating in a showcase during Create@State. Participants and winners come from various colleges across campus.  

Winners feature students from the colleges of Agriculture, Education and Behavioral Science, Engineering and Computer Science, Nursing and Health Professions, and Sciences and Mathematics. 

Below are the winners from the various categories. They are organized by the colleges they represent.

College of Agriculture 

Basic or experimental research:

First place: Rebekah Gramling Fulbright, a senior animal science major from Paragould, and Kennon Harrington, second-year graduate student studying animal science from Jonesboro, presented “Characteristics of parasitic egg infections among the A-State Sheep and Goats: An udder problem among small ruminants,” with mentor Dr. Jerica Rich, assistant professor of animal science.  

Basic or experimental research: 

Third place: Alexa Daly, a master of science in agriculture - animal science concentration student from O’Fallon, Mo., presented “Comparing artificial insemination conception rates to determine fertility differences of maternal and terminal angus sires in a commercial beef cow herd,” with mentor Dr. Jerica Rich, assistant professor of animal science. 

College of Education and Behavioral Science 

Showcase of Creativity:

Dr. Emily Devereux Student Research and Creativity Award: Sierra Miller, a senior psychology major from Cabot, presented “Princeton the Anxious Pig Goes to School." Faculty mentor was Dr. Stephanie Gotay, assistant professor of counseling. 

Quality Assessment or Quality Improvement:

Third place: Riley Jackson, a senior exercise science major from Marion, presented: “Comprehensive Jump Training Program for Minimizing ACL Injuries in Volleyball Players." Dr. Brian Church, professor of exercise science, was the faculty mentor.

College of Engineering and Computer Science 

Observational, Descriptive, or Cross-Sectional Research:

Third place: Yeojin Jung, a junior computer science major from South Korea, and Namkyeong Kim, a junior computer science major from South Korea, presented: “Using Machine Learning to Predict Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Phenotypes,” Dr. Donghoon Kim, associate professor of computer science, served as faculty mentor.  

Creative work:

First place: Hannah McLaughlin, a senior civil engineering major from Flower Mound, Texas; Ethan Perkins, a senior civil engineering major from Steele, Mo.; Connor Lowery, a senior civil engineering major from Harrisburg; and Mohammad Raja, a senior civil engineering major from Little Rock, presented “Student Steel Bridge Competition.” Faculty mentor is Dr. Jason Stewart, assistant professor of civil engineering. 

Creative work:

Second place: Saikot Dadon, an electrical engineering graduate student from Bangladesh, presented “Angular scanning method for efficient maximum power point tracking.” Dr. Mahmudul Hasan, assistant professor of electrical engineering, was the faculty mentor.   

Creative Work:

Third place: Nicholas Widmer, a senior civil engineering major from Paragould; Brian Williams, a senior civil engineering major from Dallas; Cymber Arnold, a senior civil engineering major from Bernie, Mo.; Luke Keen, a senior civil engineering major from Salem; Logan Catton, a senior civil engineering major from Bryant; and Kyle Greene, a senior civil engineering major from Conway, presented “Sustainable Solutions,” with faculty mentor Dr. Jason Stewart, assistant professor of civil engineering. 

Quality Assessment or Quality Improvement:

First place: Md Torikul Islam, a civil engineering graduate student from Dhaka, Bangladesh, presented “Performance of Waste Automobile Tires in Asphalt Concrete Pavements.” Dr. Zahid Hossain, professor of civil engineering, was the faculty mentor. 

College of Nursing and Health Professions 

Observational, Descriptive or Cross-Sectional Research:

First place: Grace Ross, a doctor of occupational therapy student from Steele, Mo., presented “Occupational Therapy’s Role in Substance Use Disorder Recovery,” with faculty mentor Dr. Christine Wright, assistant dean for access and engagement. 

Observational, Descriptive or Cross-Sectional Research:

Second place: Susan Romero, a senior radiological science major from Rogers, presented “Carbon Ion Radiation Therapy,” faculty mentor was Jody Nutt, assistant professor. 

Beck College of Sciences and Mathematics  

Basic or experimental research:

Second place: Cara Pirani, a junior biological sciences major from Cordova, Tenn., and Graysen Jones, a senior biology and chemistry major from Jonesboro, presented “Identifying Genetic Mutations in Streptococcus Mutans Required for Biofilm Formation and Tooth Attachment,” with faculty mentor Dr. Robert Shields, assistant professor of microbiology.  

Quality Assessment or Quality Improvement:

Second place: Md Tanvir Hasan Kajol, an environmental sciences graduate student from Jonesboro, presented “Surface Water Quality for a Proposed Two-stage Ditch Program, Upper Cache River Watershed, Arkansas.” The faculty mentor was Dr. Jennifer Bouldin, dean of Beck College of Sciences and Mathematics. 

Business Pitch:

First place: Mayida Oishi, a sophomore biotechnology major from Bangladesh, was awarded $500.

Second place: Emily Anguiano, a senior business administration major from Cabot, was awarded $250. 

Third place: Paige Fithen, a junior general studies major from Jonesboro; Daniela Flores, a senior biotechnology major from Mexico and Brooke Ray, a junior marketing major with a minor in entrepreneurship and a concentration in sales from Collinsville, Ill., were awarded $100.
