A-State Student Awarded American Advertising Federation Scholarship
JONESBORO – Ca Nguyen, a senior graphic design major at Arkansas State University from Hue City, Vietnam, was awarded the Jay Hagins Award District 10 (D10) scholarship worth $5,000 from the American Advertising Federation (AAF). Nguyen is the only recipient from Arkansas to receive the honor.
“I was truly surprised and beyond grateful when I found out I was awarded the scholarship. Given how competitive it is, I didn’t expect to receive it, so it was an overwhelming moment of joy. I honestly couldn’t hold back my tears when the results were announced,” said Nguyen.
In a surprise celebration that took place during class, regional AAF staff presented Nguyen with a plaque award.
She plans to utilize the scholarship to complete her studies at Arkansas State, cover entry fees for competitions, and maintain access to essential design software, which is crucial for coursework and building a competitive portfolio.
“I feel extremely fortunate to have been recognized for my efforts and skills in the advertising industry," she adds. "I truly believe that I wouldn’t have reached this point without the continuous support of my professors and peers, whose encouragement helped me take the leap,” she said.
According to Nguyen, winning the scholarship is a testament to the university and faculty.
“This recognition is a reflection of the hard work that the Department of Art + Design at A-State puts into providing opportunities and fostering connections, which I think is one of its greatest strengths," she said.
Following graduation, she plans to move to a city and begin her career. While her chapter on campus is closing, Nguyen encourages students who are about to begin their college experience to put themselves out there.
“My advice is to never hesitate to ask questions and seek help. It’s okay to show vulnerability because that’s a crucial part of growth and improvement,” she continues. “Embrace every opportunity to learn.”
Nguyen thanks her professors for their unwavering support and encouragement, the AAF Northeast Arkansas Chapter, and her parents for their constant love and support.
Hagins was a beloved AAF Houston, Texas, chapter executive director and a past D10 governor. D10 encompasses Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. AAF awarded a total of $59,000 in scholarships to students in the four states this year.
