A-State Receives CAEP Accreditation for College of Education and Behavioral Science

06/27/2025

JONESBORO – Providing a well-rounded education that develops competent and caring future educators is one of the many goals of the College of Education and Behavioral Science (COEBS) at Arkansas State University.

That end goal is being recognized with the college receiving accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparedness (CAEP).

“A-State first received CAEP accreditation in the 2017-2018 academic year and is accredited in a seven-year continuous cycle,” said Dr. Annette Hux, dean of COEBS.

CAEP assesses and enhances the quality of the education provided by universities through voluntary peer review.

“It means that the faculty in our education programs are held to high standards. They are not only delivering content but are also actively preparing future educators to be effective, ethical, and responsive professionals,” continued Hux.

This designation, which is the second CAEP accreditation the program has received, lets the public know that the educator preparation provider (EPP) meets state, professional, and institutional standards for education quality.

Hux said this accreditation confirms the quality of the education that past, current, and future students receive through COEBS, developing teachers who are ready to enter the classroom.

A-State is one of 34 providers in 15 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico to receive this accreditation.

“These institutions meet high standards so that their students receive an education that prepares them to succeed in a diverse range of classrooms after they graduate,” said Dr. Christopher A. Koch, CAEP president. “Seeking CAEP accreditation is a significant commitment on the part of an EPP.”

“The A-State EPP serves many students inside and outside of the state of Arkansas and CAEP accreditation assures most students have the ability to seek licensure in their state of residence,” Hux emphasized.

CAEP is the primary accrediting body for EPPs in the United States.

“It ensures that colleges and universities producing future teachers meet rigorous national standards for quality and effectiveness. CAEP evaluates our education programs to ensure we are preparing effective educators who positively impact student learning.  Graduating from a CAEP-accredited program may enhance job prospects and can be important to licensure requirements across different states,” Hux continued.

CAEP was created with the October 2010 adoption of a motion to consolidate the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) by the boards of the two organizations. CAEP became operational on July 1, 2013.
