A-State Creative Media Production Students to Host Documentary Showcase

04/24/2025

JONESBORO – Students in the creative media production program in the School of Media and Journalism at Arkansas State University will host a documentary showcase from 3 until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30. The event will be held in the auditorium of Reng Student Union, located at 101 North Caraway Rd.

"While the students in creative media production are already producing content at the global level on platforms such as YouTube and Meta, it is vital for students to receive local, in-person feedback from their peers, family and stakeholders," said Galen Perkins, instructor in creative media production.

This is the third year this documentary showcase has been held.

"We show the documentaries back-to-back as if they were at a film festival or movie theater. Each documentary is required to meet a specific length of 26 minutes and 46 seconds, and we allot roughly 15 minutes for a question-and-answer session. New to this year, we will have the audience vote for their favorite documentary," Perkins added.

Students in the program will showcase four documentaries from the video production three class.

“Spare to Strike,” produced by sophomore creative media production major Emily Pilkington of Clinton; senior creative media production major Dalton Adams of Harrison; sophomore creative media production major Carson Campbell of Jonesboro; junior creative media production major Christian Sandoval of Jonesboro; and senior creative media production major Krystal Smith of Little Rock, will begin at 3 p.m.

This documentary follows the A-State women's bowling team that made its 17th consecutive appearance at the NCAA tournament this past season. More information is available at instagram.com/sparetostrike.

“Game Changers,” produced by junior creative media production major Christian Wilcox of Jackson, Tenn.; junior creative media production major Tristan Bates of Cabot; sophomore creative media production major Liliana Dawson of Olive Branch, Miss.; junior creative media production major Thanh Nguyen of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; junior creative media production major George Noguchi of Osaka, Japan, will begin at 3:40 p.m.

This documentary explores the history of women in the gaming industry, including gamers, developers and influencers. More information may be found at instagram.com/gamechangersdoc.

"Tuning In," produced by Ty Phillips, a graduate student in mass communications from Harrison; sophomore creative media production major David Carey of Bartlett, Tenn.; junior creative media production major Laura Moore of Corning; and senior creative media production major TeeJay Jones of Marianna, will begin at 4:20 p.m.

This documentary focuses on the history of KASU, A-State's public radio station, which was established in 1957. More information can be found at instagram.com/tuningin_documentary.

"Keepers of the Ancient Library,” produced by senior creative media production major Kenzi Cutler of Harrison, will begin at 5 p.m.

For this documentary, producer Cutler also serves as the host in a "travelogue" about her trip to the Peruvian Amazon, where she stayed with and worked at the nonprofit organization Junglekeepers. More information is available at instagram.com/keepersoftheancientlibrary.

Following the conclusion of the semester, students enter their documentaries into film festivals across the United States.

"We have been fortunate to have documentaries each year showcased off campus at film festivals in Searcy, Little Rock, Dallas, Beverly Hills, and Joplin, Mo.," said Perkins.

The event is free to attend. For more information, one may call 870-972-3070.
