A-State Confers 868 Diplomas to Summer Graduates

JONESBORO — “A time of excitement” was how Provost Dr. Lynita Cooksey defined the evening as she conferred 868 degrees to members of the 2014 summer graduating class at Arkansas State University Friday.

“Tonight is a celebration,” said Cooksey who also serves as A-State’s vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. “Commencement is a time of excitement for Arkansas State University, for graduates, their families and friends.”

Graduating senior Chelsea Patton of Jonesboro, who received her bachelor of science in education degree, addressed the gathering at the Convocation Center on behalf of the graduating class to “thank family, friends and loved ones who made this journey possible.”

Patton, who graduated summa cum laude and is a Chancellor’s List student, majored in exercise science and is entering the doctor of physical therapy program at Arkansas State in the fall semester.

In addition to Patton, 43 candidates graduated with honors, including 26 cum laude, 11 magna cum laude, two cum laude/university honors, two summa cum laude/university honors, one summa cum laude and one magna cum laude/university honors.

Undergraduate and graduate-level students earned degrees from Arkansas State’s colleges of Agriculture and Technology, Business, Education and Behavioral Science, Engineering, Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Media and Communication, Nursing and Health Professions, Sciences and Mathematics, University College and the Honors College.

A reception honoring all students and their families was held following the commencement ceremony.
