Welcome to Arkansas State University!

Admissions Process Overview

Contingent upon successful completion of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education’s accreditation process, Arkansas State University CVM plans to admit its first class in Fall 2026.  Below provides an overview of the admissions process that will be implemented after successful completion of the AVMA COE’s accreditation process.

All admissions applications that meet the college’s minimum requirements for consideration are reviewed by the Admissions Committee.  The Admissions Committee is composed of A-State CVM Faculty Members, community veterinarian partners, and the Associate Dean for Student Programs and Admissions.

Below are the phases we go through for the student selection process:

  • Phase 1: Verification and GPA Calculation

The A-State Office of Student Programs and Admissions will conduct an initial review of each applicant’s credentials, including letters of recommendation, official academic transcripts, and the Slate/VMCAS application and supplemental application.  All information will be verified, and candidates GPAs will be calculated as outlined in the rubric below. Applicants may not be reviewed for a few reasons including poor letters of recommendations, an unachievable number of working/volunteer experience hours per week (e.g. 140 hours per week while a full-time student), multiple recent/current supervisors unreachable, or self-disclosure of an inability to meet the technical standards. All applicants that meet eligibility requirements will be placed into two independent applicant pools, Arkansas Residents and Out-of-state Residents which are independently considered for admission using identical processes and rubrics during Phase 2.

Out-of-state students will pay out-of-state tuition for the duration of their DVM program.

  • Phase 2: Admissions Committee Member Review

All qualified applications will be reviewed by at least two members of the Admissions Committee, including at least one A-State faculty member and one veterinarian (who may be an A-State faculty member or an Arkansas veterinarian). A holistic review process will be employed to evaluate both the academic and non-academic components of each application. Each reviewer will independently assess the application and assign points to each section as outlined in the rubric overview.

  • Phase 3: Admissions Committee Full Member Review

The top applicants from the in-state candidate pool and the out-of-state applicant pool will undergo further review and discussion by the full committee to determine final rankings. A wait list will also be determined at this time.

  • Phase 4: Top Candidates are Offered Admission or Conditional Admission

Admission or conditional admission will be offered to the top candidates. Conditional admission is offered for applicants with prerequisites in progress at the time of admission decisions. These prerequisites must be completed by July 15 of the admitting year and meet the minimum grade requirements. Failure to do so will result in the withdrawal of the admission offer.

It is planned that after Fall 2026, incoming DVM classes will consist of approximately 50% Arkansas Residents and 50% Out-of-state Residents for a total of 120 students. This is subject to change based upon the applicant pool.

Who composes the Admissions Committee?

The Admissions Committee consists of A-State CVM faculty members, including the Associate Dean of Student Programs and Admissions, and Arkansas veterinarians. The Arkansas veterinarians provide insights into the current challenges faced by private and public practice veterinarians, Arkansas community needs and the greater veterinary community. The committee size will grow based on the number of applicants to ensure a sustainable review process that ensures each qualified applicant is thoroughly and fairly reviewed and will be adjusted to comply with the most current Standards of Accreditation. At all times, the majority of the Admissions Committee will be full-time faculty members.

Admissions Committee members have specialized training in A-State CVM’s admissions policies, procedures, and how to complete a holistic review of the Slate/VMCAS application.
