Welcome to Arkansas State University!


The weekly educational learning experiences will be completed over 44 weeks while working at APT.  The last 8 weeks of the residency will be on the site of Arkansas State University.  Once the resident begins work at A-State, additional objectives which include running a pro-bono clinic, interprofessional collaboration and educating physical therapy students will occur.

Module 1 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and record an anatomy and physiology presentation to be used for teaching the DPT students that focuses on the reproductive system and urologic system.  
  2. The resident will develop a personal plan for professional development in women’s health physical therapy.
  3. Complete MedBridge course Professionalism in Practice: Examining Common Ethical Challenges (2.5 hours- not approved for Arkansas CEU’s)

Module 2 Objective:

  1. The resident will analyze the description of residency practices to assess the importance of learning domain objectives and primary health conditions during the program
  2. The resident will write a reflection paper on two learning domain objectives and two primary health conditions about which they are most excited to learn.
  3. The resident will complete the MedBridge course:  Functions and Dysfunctions of the Pelvic Girdle and Pelvic Floor (1.75 CEUs)

Module 3 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and present a lecture on urinary frequency and urinary urgency using evidence-based practice guidelines to faculty mentors and DPT students.
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course:  Bladder Control Evaluation and Treatment: Urinary Urgency and Incontinence (1.5 CEUs)

Module 4 Objective:

  1.  The resident will develop and present a lecture on urinary incontinence (stress, urge, mixed) using evidence-based practice guidelines to faculty mentors and DPT students.
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course: Bladder Control: Stress Incontinence and Pelvic Floor Muscle Training (1.5 CEUs)

Module 5 Objective:

  1. The resident will create a patient education handout for bladder health using evidence-based practice guidelines. 
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course: Orthopedic Connections to Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (1.75 CEUs)

Module 6 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and present a lecture on pelvic organ prolapse using evidence-based practice guidelines to faculty mentors and DPT students.
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course: Understanding Prolapse (1.5 CEUs)

Module 7 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and present a lecture on pelvic girdle pain using evidence-based practice guidelines to faculty mentors and DPT students.

Module 8 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop a patient education handout for diastasis recti containing one of each: exercise, bending/lifting/carrying methods, and contraindications.

Module 9 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and present a lecture on urinary incontinence, urgency, or frequency of a patient the resident completed an evaluation and treatment to faculty mentors and DPT students.

Module 10 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and present a lecture on similarities and differences of urinary and fecal incontinence to faculty mentors and DPT students.

Module 11 Objective:

  1. The resident will complete a literature review that summarizes evidence-based practice guidelines for constipation.

Module 12 Objective:

  1.  The resident will develop and present a lecture on evidence-based practice guidelines for use of two specific dilators and two lubricants for the treatment of vaginismus, dyspareunia, and pelvic pain (internal) to faculty mentors and DPT students.
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course: Pelvic Pain Applications in Rehabilitation (Recorded Webinar) (3.25 CEU’s; not approved in Arkansas)

Module 13 Objective:

  1. The resident will create a patient education handout on pelvic adhesions and scar tissue (e.g. pelvic, abdominal, perineal) using evidence-based practice guidelines.

Module 14 Objective:

  1. The resident will complete a case report on pelvic pain of a patient with whom the resident has participated in evaluation and treatment.

Module 15 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and present a lecture on the female/athlete triad using evidence-based practice guidelines to faculty mentors and DPT students.
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course: The Female Athlete Triad (3.25 CEUs; not approved in AR)

Module 16 Objective:

  1. The resident will create a patient education handout for lifestyle adjustments to improve bone density (e.g. osteopenia, osteoporosis) and reduce associated injury using evidence-based practice guidelines.
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course: Clinical Management of the Older Adult with Osteoporosis (2 CEUs)

Module 17 Objective:

  1. The resident will complete a literature review on amenorrhea/dysmenorrhea using evidence-based practice guidelines.
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course: Part A: Sex and Sexuality in Physical Therapy Practice (2 CEUs)

Module 18 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and present a lecture on menopause using evidence-based practice guidelines to faculty mentors and DPT students.
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course: Part B: Sex and Sexuality in Physical Therapy Practice (4 CEUs)

Module 19 Objective:

  1. The resident will create a patient education handout for lifestyle adjustments and cushions for patients with coccygodynia.  

Module 20 Objective:

  1. The resident will complete a literature review on dyssynergia and gastroparesis for physical therapy practice using evidence-based practice guidelines. 

Module 21 Objective:

  1. The resident will perform a literature review of the success /failure rate of surgical procedures (e.g., hysterectomy and gynecologic conditions/surgery) and patient safety with surgical tools and materials. 

Module 22 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and present a lecture on practice guidelines for prostate cancer to faculty mentors and DPT students.
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course: Prostate Cancer Survivorship (1.5 CEUs)

Module 23 Objective:

  1. The resident will complete a literature review of best practices for the treatment of interstitial cystitis. 
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course: Understanding Endometriosis (1.5 CEUs)

Module 24 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and present a lecture on practice guidelines for endometriosis to faculty mentors and DPT students.

Module 25 Objective:

  1. The resident will create a patient education handout containing FODMAP and other foods to avoid irritable bowel syndrome.

Module 26 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and present a lecture on practice guidelines for high-risk pregnancy to faculty mentors and DPT students.

Module 27 Objective:

  1. The resident will complete a literature review on best practices in medicine and physical therapy for vulvar pain syndrome (vestibulitis and vulvodynia).

Module 28 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and present a lecture on evidence-based practice guidelines for retention of urine, nocturnal enuresis, and neurogenic bladder for faculty mentors and DPT students.
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course:  Geriatric Bladder Control: Neurogenic Bladder and Emptying Dysfunctions (1.5 CEUs)

Module 29 Objective:

  1. The resident will complete a literature review on connective tissue disorders (e.g., Marfan’s Ehler’s Danlos).

Module 30 Objective:

  1. The resident will complete a literature review that examines the impact of autoimmune disorders (e.g., RA, lupus) on women’s health diagnosis and treatment using evidence-based practice guidelines 

Module 31 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and present a lecture on evidence-based practice guidelines for fibromyalgia and chronic pain syndrome to faculty mentors and DPT students.
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course on chronic pain syndrome.

Module 32 Objective:

  1. The resident will create a case report on a multi-system condition of a patient the resident has completed an evaluation and treatment.
  2. The resident will complete the Medbridge course: The Physical Therapist’s Role in Health and Wellness (Not approved for Arkansas CEU’s)

Module 33 Objective:

  1. The resident will complete the Medbridge course: Breast Cancer Survivorship (1.5 CEUs)

Module 34 Objective:

  1. The resident will create a patient education handout containing lymphedema garments and self-treatment for lymphatic cording.
  2. Cancer Survivorship: Basic Skills to Manage Breast-Cancer-Related Edema (2 CEUs)

Module 35 Objective:

  1. The resident will develop and present a lecture on uterine/ovarian cancer using evidence-based practice to faculty mentors and DPT students.

Module 36 Objective:

  1. The resident will complete a literature review on colorectal disorders and physical therapy treatment methods.

Module 37 Objective:

  1. The resident will complete a “capstone” case report of a patient whom the resident has participated in evaluation and treatment in preparation for submission to WCS exam

Module 38 Objective:

  1. The resident will complete the Medbridge course:  Leadership is a Journey: One Step at a Time (1.5 CEUs)
  2. The resident will write a reflection paper on his/her preferred teaching and learning styles, teaching methods, and how he/she will assess the DPT students.
  3. The resident will develop a syllabus for teaching the Special Topics: Women’s Health course for DPT students.
  4. The resident will reflect and modify his/her personal plan for professional development in women’s health physical therapy.

Module 39 Objective:

  1. The resident will complete the APTA Clinical Instructor Credentialing Level I course (1.6 CEUs)

 

Interprofessional Education Experiences

Interprofessional education and collaborative practice experiences will be offered at select times throughout the 12-month period.  The College of Nursing and Health Professions offers exposure and immersion courses throughout the year that residents may choose to participate in.  All residents must complete the following:

Exposure activities= 4 contact hours

Immersion activities = 4 contact hours

Competency activities = 10 hours

A-State Learning Experiences (Weeks 45-52)

  1. The resident will complete cadaver dissection of the pelvic floor.
  2. The resident will design, deliver and evaluate instructional activities for the Special Topics course focused on Women’s Health for teaching to the Doctor of Physical Therapy students at A-State.
  3. The resident will integrate appropriate educational strategies to deliver the Special Topics course focused on Women’s Health to students within the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at A-State.

4. The resident will participate in an interprofessional Pro-Bono clinic on the A-State campus in September- October for 10 hours/week.
