Nominations Being Sought for Ninth Annual Living Legends Awards

JONESBORO – Preparations are underway for the ninth annual Living Legends Awards, which will be held during the Black History Month celebrations early next year.  
 
Nominations are open during October, so community members can participate in the process of honoring their peers.  

“It's important for our community to take part in the nomination process because many individuals who make the greatest impact do so quietly, consistently and without seeking recognition,” said Carnesha Ben, committee member, Living Legends.  
 
Ben said the public often knows those who deserve the honor of becoming a living legend.  
 
"When people nominate those they have seen making a difference, it ensures that the Living Legends Awards truly reflect the voices and values of the community we serve,” Ben added. 

The theme this year is “From Black Print Culture to Digital Blackness.”  
 
“The theme highlights the evolution of Black storytelling and cultural expression, from historical prints of traditions to the digital platforms shaping today's narratives. It honors the ways Black voices have preserved history, built community, and influenced social change across generations,” Ben said.  
 
This theme aligns with the spirit and tradition of the Living Legends Awards, celebrating individuals whose work creates an impact that carries forward into the future. Ben said she and the other committee members take this process as both an honor and a responsibility. 
 
"The Living Legends Awards allow us to pause, reflect and acknowledge individuals whose dedication has shaped our community in meaningful ways. It's significant to us that this celebration takes place during Black History Month, because it offers us the opportunity to uplift stories of leadership, resilience and service that continue to inspire future generations. Each year, we're reminded of how powerful it is to preserve these legacies and share them with the A-State family.” 
 
Nominations are being accepted through Saturday, Oct. 31.  
 
“We look for nominations that clearly demonstrate how the nominee has contributed to A-State or surrounding communities through leadership, advocacy, collaboration or service,” Ben continued. "Strong nominations include specific examples, projects they've led, initiatives they've supported, or ways they've positively influenced others.”
