Earth Day Celebration to be Held April 22 at A-State
JONESBORO – Arkansas State University will celebrate Earth Day from 10 a.m. until
2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22.
“This community event will feature hands-on activities, educational booths, and opportunities
for students to learn more about sustainability and environmental stewardship,” said
Melissa Dooley, director of Environmental, Health and Safety.
The activities will be held on Heritage Plaza Lawn, located just east of Reng Student
Union.
“This year, we are especially pleased to highlight our Earth Day art contest, sponsored
by the Keep Jonesboro Beautiful Commission and Unico Bank. Elementary students are
encouraged to create artwork using recyclable materials and to explore the theme ‘Our
Power, Our Planet,’” Dooley added.
Goals of the art contest are to give new life to recyclable items by turning them
into art, demonstrate what counts as recyclable materials, encourage participants
to educate themselves on what is most commonly recycled in the area, and inspire students
to think creatively.
“This event is part of our ongoing commitment to environmental progress and community
engagement,” said Dooley.
Several university clubs and committees will participate to share the work they are
doing to improve the environment.
“We will have several local vendors and speakers who will share what they do to promote
environmental consciousness,” Dooley continued.
This event is open to the public and made available to all local primary and secondary
schools. Everyone is invited to attend.
