A-State Exercise Science Programs Receive STEM Designation
JONESBORO – Arkansas State University’s undergraduate and graduate exercise science
programs have officially received science, technology, engineering and mathematics
(STEM) designation, further recognizing the scientific rigor and workforce relevance
of the programs.
The STEM designation applies to both the bachelor's and master’s degrees in the exercise
science program, highlighting the discipline’s strong foundation in biology, physiology,
biomechanics, data analysis and evidence-based practice.
“This designation reflects the high-quality curriculum and scientific training our
students receive,” said Dr. Amanda Wheeler Gryffin, chair of the Department of Kinesiology.
“Exercise science is an interdisciplinary field that integrates human physiology,
biomechanics, technology and research to improve health, performance and quality of
life. STEM recognition affirms the important role our programs play in preparing graduates
for careers in healthcare, human performance, research and related industries.”
Through coursework, laboratory experiences, and research opportunities, students gain
the knowledge and technical skills needed to address complex questions related to
human movement, exercise and health.
According to Dr. Annette Hux, dean of the College of Education and Behavioral Science,
the designation also supports the university’s commitment to expanding opportunities
in high-demand STEM disciplines.
“The STEM designation reinforces the value of our exercise science programs and the
growing importance of preparing students with scientific and analytical skills that
are highly sought after in today’s workforce,” Hux said.
The designation represents an important milestone for the department as it continues
to strengthen academic offerings, expand research opportunities, and prepare students
to address complex health and performance challenges through science-driven solutions.
