Non-Traditional A-State Students to be Honored with Campus Awards During Appreciation Week, Nov. 4-8

Non-traditional undergraduate students (25 years and older) will be honored at Arkansas State University at the inaugural Non-traditional Student Recognition program held on Thursday, Nov. 7.

JONESBORO – Non-traditional undergraduate students (25 years and older) will be honored at Arkansas State University at the inaugural Non-traditional Student Recognition program held on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. in Centennial Hall of the Carl R. Reng Student Union.

Undergraduate non-traditional students who have a 3.75 or higher GPA will receive a certificate of achievement.

“We have many academically astute non-traditional students at A-State who have the added pressures of balancing school with family and work. This program is to recognize and celebrate them for their hard work in the classroom,” stated Niya Blair, director of the Multicultural Center.

Faculty and staff also nominated non-traditional students for individual awards. The awards are as follows:

The School Pride Award goes to a student who demonstrates school spirit by being involved on campus and by attending A-State sporting events.

The Above and Beyond Award goes to a student that demonstrates dedication to studies and works hard to succeed academically.

The Leadership Award is for a student who demonstrates leadership qualities and makes an impact through their leadership role in a campus organization.

The Volunteerism Award goes to a student who is actively involved in giving back to the community through volunteer efforts.

Award recipients will be announced at the recognition program. The program is a part of the National Non‑Traditional Student Appreciation Week (Nov. 4-8) celebration.

• Scholarship Opportunity for Study AbroadNoon: Carl R. Reng Student Union Multicultural CenterNon-traditional student Jonathan Carmichael will share information about how he received the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Costa Rica and share his experience while there.

Tuesday, Nov. 5

• Educational Workshop: Affordable Care Act Info 101Noon: Carl R. Reng Student Union Multicultural CenterJodie Hightower, from the Arkansas Department of Health, will speak about the Affordable Care Act and other insurance options.

Wednesday, Nov. 6

• Motivational WednesdayNoon: Carl R. Reng Student Union Multicultural CenterDr. Phil Hestand, director of counseling services, will share advice on how to minimize and overcome stress and non-traditional students will share their success stories of how to balance school, family, and work.

Friday, Nov. 8

• Movie Night: Monsters University7 p.m. & 9 p.m., Carl R. Reng Student Union-Auditorium
