Faculty Center To Host Teaching and Learning Symposium

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University’s Faculty Center is presenting its third annual “Teaching & Learning Symposium,” Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., in Centennial Hall on the third floor of the Carl R. Reng Student Union, 101 N. Caraway Road. The symposium is titled “Transformative Teaching: Meeting Our Students Where They Are.” Participants should register for the event, which includes lunch, along with giveaways and door prizes. “The A-State Faculty Center is excited to offer this day of workshops and presentations for the third year in a row,” said Lisa Bohn, assistant professor of theatre. “It’s thrilling to learn what our colleagues are doing in their research and in the classroom. I leave the symposium each year revitalized and inspired by my fellow educators.
“This year’s theme is especially relevant right now—meeting our students where they are. This is not about ‘dumbing things down’ to reach them; it’s about examining how today’s students learn, which is different than previous generations, and finding engaging and dynamic ways to connect them to the content that will ensure student success.”
Those attending the symposium can discover various ways to improve pedagogy and curriculum, assessment and evaluation and technology in learning by exploring with colleagues and educational technology partners.
A-State faculty and staff will conduct presentations and mini-workshops with technology partners including Blackboard, Respondus, McGraw-Hill, EvaluationKit, Faculty 180 and others.
The Faculty Center seeks to increase teaching, research and service by A-State faculty through professional development opportunities. In addition to traditional teaching, research and advising responsibilities, faculty now stay informed about the latest edge of technology in the classroom.
