Area High School Students Win Arkansas State Communications Day Awards
JONESBORO, ARK. — Fountain Lake High School of Hot Springs won the overall sweepstakes award Saturday, March 1, at the 76th Annual Communication Day at Arkansas State University. Greene County Tech High School was named first runner-up, followed by Wynne High School, second runner-up, and Har-Ber High School of Springdale and Northeast Arkansas Christian Home Educators (NEACHE) tied for third runner-up. Students competed in more than 20 newspaper, web, communications, debate and video competitions.
Group first place winners are Brandon Buccheri and Sam Struebing from Har-Ber High School, public service announcement; Taylor Morgan from Greene County Tech, documentary short; Jackson Hicks from Greene County Tech, sports news reporting; Hannah Pascua, Shayna McMillian, and Mateshia Hudson from Nettleton High School, music video; Brandon Buccheri and Sam Struebing from Har-Ber High School, television reporting; TECH TV from Greene County Tech, sports programming, and Ashley Hidalgo from Har-Ber High School, video promotion.
In individual contests, winners are Aneshah Washington from Wynne, public relations; Steward Bridger, Claudia Raffo, Mackenzie Dallas from Nettleton, television commercials; Kristian Jumper from Wynne, advertising copy and layout; Camden Metheny from Buffalo Island Central, headline writing; Austin Adams from Greene County Tech, photography; Austin Adams from Greene County Tech, television anchoring; Alec Tripp from NEACHE, feature; McKenzie Boger from Wynne, broadcast news writing; Seth Price from NEACHE, newspaper copy reading; Darian Darnell from Marion High School, editorial writing; Christian Levs from Stuttgart High School, editorial cartooning; Derrick Fryar from Fountain Lake High School, impromptu debate; Derrick Fryar from Fountain Lake, social media; and Nate Johnson from NEACHE, extemporaneous speaking.
Arkansas State’s College of Media and Communication combines a foundation in the liberal arts and sciences with a core of professional courses to give students the knowledge base and skill set needed to succeed in communications. Studies in the college allow students to learn to gather, organize, synthesize and communicate information professionally in a democratic, multi-cultural society.
They learn to think critically and communicate effectively in preparation for productive roles in news, radio, television, film, public relations, organizational communication, advertising, photojournalism, graphic communications, web and multimedia production and design or health communication.
The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism & Mass Communications (ACEJMC) certifies the college for A-State’s undergraduate programs in journalism and radio-television.
