Activities For Campus Safety Awareness Month, Sept. 14-18

JONESBORO – In observance of the 2015 National Campus Safety Awareness Month, Arkansas
State University’s University Police Department (UPD) will present different events
and activities designed to help educate students, faculty, staff and visitors to stay
safe on campus, Monday through Friday, Sept. 14-18, at the Carl R. Reng Student Union.
In addition, A-State’s Counseling Center will offer displays promoting Sexual Assault
and Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Week.
The University Police Department regularly presents programs to the university community
regarding crime prevention and available topics for campus safety awareness, both
on and off campus. The events are free and open to the public as UPD personnel will
make presentations on safety related topics and safety tips daily from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
The week-long session, located on the first floor of the union and Heritage Plaza
Lawn, includes the following topics:
• Monday, Sept. 14: UPD 101—Safety on Campus.
• Tuesday, Sept. 15: Drinking/Texting Driving Simulator (10 a.m.-1 p.m.)
• Wednesday, Sept. 16: Drinking/Texting Driving Simulator (10 a.m.-1 p.m.)
• Thursday, Sept. 17: Sexual Assault Awareness/Domestic Violence.
• Friday, Sept. 18: Crosswalk Safety Awareness (8 a.m.-1 p.m.), Marion Berry Parkway
and Aggie Road intersection.
A rape aggression defense class (RAD) will be presented, Monday through Wednesday, Sept. 14-16, in the Mockingbird Room
of the union (third floor) from 5-9 p.m.
UPD personnel will offer its active shooter presentations several times throughout the week in the Student Union Auditorium. Starting times
are:
• Monday, Sept. 14: 9-9:50 a.m., 11-11:50 a.m., 1-1:50 p.m. and 3-3:50 p.m.
• Tuesday, Sept. 15: 8-9:15 a.m., 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and 2-3:15 p.m.
• Wednesday, Sept. 16: 8-8:50 a.m., 10-10:50 a.m., 12-12:50 p.m., 2-2:50 p.m. and 4-4:50
p.m.
• Thursday, Sept. 17: 9:30-10:45 a.m., 12:30-1:45 p.m. and 3:30-4:45 p.m.
In conjunction with National Campus Safety Awareness Month, the A-State Counseling
Center is also sponsoring a series of displays in observance of Sexual Assault and
Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Week.
The Silent Witness Exhibit: 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Daily—Natural State Lounge, second floor,
Student Union. The Silent Witness Exhibit is a display memorializing each of the Arkansas women who
were murdered during domestic violence incidents during the past year.
11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Daily— Natural State Lounge, second floor, Student Union. Students can drop by and participate in activities related to prevention and awareness
of sexual assault and domestic violence.
Tuesday, Sept. 15, 7 p.m., Candlelight Vigil —Heritage Plaza, Student Union. The candlelight vigil memorializes Arkansas women murdered during domestic violence
incidents during the past year. Each woman’s personal story will be presented and
a candle lit in her honor. Guests of honor will also share their personal experiences.
Wednesday, Sept. 16, 5:30 p.m., Campus Sexual Assault and Violence Panel—St. Francis
River Room, Student Union—sponsored by the A-State Young Democrats.
Thursday, Sept. 17, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 pm, Red Wolves Got Your Back—St. Francis River
Room, Student Union. This activity is bystander intervention training. Participants will learn methods
for intervention when fellow students may need help.
Thursday, Sept. 17, 6 p.m., Self-Defense Training—Spring River Room, Student Union.
Officer Traci Simpson of the A-State University Police Department will discuss personal
safety in potentially dangerous situations and will teach some basic self-defense
techniques. This is a co-ed presentation.
Co-sponsors for the week include A-State Young Democrats and the Women and Gender
Studies program.
