A-State To Hold Free Tourniquet Training Session Dec. 3

JONESBORO – A free tourniquet training session for Arkansas State University faculty and staff, designed to save lives by stopping bleeding from a life-threatening wound, is set for Thursday, Dec. 3, from 3-5 p.m., in the Convocation Center, 217 Olympic Drive. The hands-on session includes information about hemorrhage control through the proper application of tourniquets in the immediate aftermath of traumatic injuries.

JONESBORO – A free tourniquet training session for Arkansas State University faculty and staff, designed to save lives by stopping bleeding from a life-threatening wound, is set for Thursday, Dec. 3, from 3-5 p.m., in the Convocation Center, 217 Olympic Drive. The hands-on session includes information about hemorrhage control through the proper application of tourniquets in the immediate aftermath of traumatic injuries.
Local physician Dr. Spencer Guinn of Jonesboro Orthopedics and Sports Medicine is the lead instructor and is sponsoring the event along with the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) of Salt Lake City, Utah. The WMS is a leading organization devoted to wilderness medical challenges and health and safety issues in extreme situations. In addition to Guinn, other physicians, police officers and firefighters will serve as instructors.
“We’re encouraging as many of our faculty and staff as can to take Dr. Guinn’s training,” said Jon Carvell, coordinator for University Safety and Emergency Management at A-State. “We know one of his goals is for A-State to become one of the first universities to have a substantial number of our personnel trained to use the tools.”
The course will begin with a lecture in the Convocation Center auditorium before adjourning to the Hames Room for hands-on tourniquet application and return demonstrations by each participant to make sure they understand and can do it correctly.
“This training is critically important to everyone, not just medical personnel or licensed first responders,” added Dr. Deborah Persell, program director for A-State’s Regional Center for Disaster Preparedness Education. “Bleeding is one of the most preventable causes of death in severe injuries.
“If we, anyone, can stop the bleeding then it gives healthcare personnel precious time to then treat other injuries the person may have and lives are saved. The course is presented in easy to understand terms so you don't have to be a health care provider to understand or learn how to manage a hemorrhage.”
