Dr. Zhang conducts cutting-edge research to promote public health and welfare; ensure clean drinking water supply; and advance affordable, clean, and renewable energy production. His research expertise encompasses safe drinking water supply and distribution, detection and control of opportunistic pathogens in drinking water, monitoring and control of drinking water disinfection by-products, biochemical wastewater treatment, surface water quality monitoring and restoration, control of harmful cyanobacterial blooms, anaerobic digestion of municipal sludge for renewable energy production, environmental microbiology, and environmental nanotechnology.
