03/25/2024

PIGGOTT — Those seeking a fun spot to observe the April 8 solar eclipse have many options. The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center (HPMEC), an Arkansas State University Heritage Site, will host a series of events to celebrate the eclipse.  HPMEC will host a three-day series of events starting on Friday, April 5, with a movie on the lawn. This event, featuring the movie ”October Sky,” is sponsored by Piggott State Bank and is free to the public.   On Sunday, April 7, tours of the Pfeiffer home will be held from 1 until 3 p.m.

On Monday, April 8, at 11 a.m. a presentation on the eclipse will be held on the museum grounds by Dr. Les Johnson, NASA space propulsion technologist and mission principal investigator.

“It is important to provide educational programming for all ages to our community in the Delta,” said Shannon Williams, HPMEC director.  Williams said there will be many organizations on hand with booths and activities.

The Piggott Public Library will have a life-sized Candy Land game. A sno-cone stand will be hosted by the Piggott FBLA. The Piggott Fire Department will have a truck on hand for tours. A scavenger hunt will be hosted by the Piggott Chamber of Commerce. Face Painting will be done by the Piggott Art Club. The Clay County Fairgrounds will host old-fashioned outdoor games.  The sun will be partially obscured by the moon in Piggott from 12:24 p.m. until about 3:15 p.m. and will reach totality from 1:56 until 1:59 p.m., lasting 3 minutes and 16 seconds.

Admission to view the eclipse is $5 per person. Businesses can reserve spots for $25 for their employees.  The museum will have eclipse treat boxes for $10, which come with a pair of commemorative eclipse glasses in honor of the Ernest Hemingway novel "The Sun Also Rises."  An eclipse event will also be held at The Dyess Colony: Johnny Cash Boyhood Home in Dyess.
