Undergraduate Academic Standing and Restart


  • Good Standing

    Academic Good Standing at Arkansas State University occurs when a student achieves both a current semester AND minimum cumulative GPA of 2.000 (C average). Only those grades earned at A-State are used in computing the GPA. Academic Good Standing status allows for continued enrollment in the University without restriction.

  • Probation

    Students who fall out of good academic standing with the University are subject to a change in academic status.

    Academic Probation

    Students are placed on academic probation when their cumulative OR semester institutional GPA is below a 2.00.

  • Suspension

    Academic Suspension

    Students are placed on academic suspension when their cumulative and semester institutional GPA are below a 2.00 and they are already on academic probation.

    Suspension Period

    Students are required to sit out a suspension period unless they are eligible to participate in the Restart@state Program. 

    A-State does not offer an appeal process for students who earn a first academic suspension. Students must either enroll in and successfully complete the Restart@state program (see below) or may opt to sit out for two or more calendar years following the semester in which the suspension was earned. The Suspension Clearance Form is for students returning to A-State following academic suspension as outlined in the A-State Undergraduate Bul­letin. Students may need to complete the readmission process with the university.

  • Restart @stAte

    The Restart@state Program is a mandatory intervention program for students placed on a first academic suspension and transfer students admitted to the university by appeal.

    Requirements

    Eligible students who take advantage of this opportunity are enrolled in the Restart Program. The main program requirement is enrollment in a one-credit, graded course.

    The Restart Seminar is designed to aid students back to solid academic performance with emphasis placed on self-responsibility, proper decision-making and study skills strategies. Students must submit a completed application before consideration for acceptance into the program.

    Restart Workshops Dates

    All students who participate in the Restart Program must attend an information workshop prior to the start of classes.

    • November 7 at 1:00 pm Wilson Advising Center
    • December 12 at 1:00 pm Wilson Advising Center

    Students are not eligible for the Restart@state Program and must adhere to the Readmission After Suspension Policy see if:

    • they are not on a first suspension.
    • they have not attended Arkansas State University for 2 or more years since the suspension was earned.
    • they have previously attempted Restart@state.

    Degree Center Students

    Students attending an A-State Degree Center who must enroll in the Restart Program should contact the Wilson Advising Center at 870-972-3001 for registration questions. Degree Center Students are required to complete the Restart Application and adhere to all deadlines as other students enrolling in the program. It is the student's responsibility to secure the advisor's signature for the application. The Wilson Advising Center will assist with securing signatures from other university departments. You are not required to attend the workshop in Jonesboro.  Instead, you will visit with the site coordinator on the campus you attend to complete and submit paperwork to the Wilson Advising Center. You will enroll in an online version of the course to complete assignments but will visit with the site coordinator to satisfy class meetings. The Restart Coordinator will be available for electronic meetings to answer any questions you have throughout the semester. 

    A-State Online Students

    Students enrolled through A-State Online Programs may seek conditional, yet immediate enrollment to Restart by working with the A-State Online Programs Director. A-State Online Program Students are required to complete the Restart Application and adhere to all deadlines as other students enrolling in the program. It is the student's responsibility to secure the advisor's signature for the application. A-State Online Programs will assist with securing signatures from other university departments. You are not required to attend the workshop in Jonesboro. Instead, you will review the workshop information online. You will enroll in an online version of the course to complete assignments. You may contact the Restart Program Coordinator for questions throughout the semester in which you are enrolled.

  • Readmission After Suspension

    First Suspension

    Students who are suspended from the university for the first time must complete the Restart Application to enroll in the Restart@state program. (See procedures for enrollment under the Restart@state Program.) All students considering taking coursework at another institution while on the first suspension from A-State are strongly advised to meet with their A-State academic advisors for guidance on appropriate coursework selection. (See section on Transferring Work from Other Institutions while on First Suspension.)

    Second and Third Suspension

    Students who earn a second and third suspension from the university are not permitted to enroll at A-State for one calendar year. The suspended period is intentional to provide time for students to gain an appreciation for the opportunity to attend college. After serving the suspen­sion period, the student must visit the Wilson Advising Center to complete the Academic Standing Clearance Form prior to registration.

    Subsequent Suspension

    Students who earn a fourth or subsequent suspension from the university are dismissed from the university. Permission to return must be granted by appeal to the University Graduation and Academic Credit Appeals Committee.

    Transferring Work from Other Institutions while on Suspension

    Students serving a first, second, or third suspension who complete coursework at a different institution during their suspended period, may have their Coursework Reviewed for acceptance at A-State, upon return.

    When to complete the Restart Application

    • Students placed on a first suspension who wish to continue enrollment at A-State without separation.

    When to complete the Suspension Clearance form

    • Students on a first suspension who opt to sit out for two calendar years but now wish to return to A-State.
    • Students on second or third suspension who wish to return to A-State after serving one calendar year of mandatory suspension.

    When to complete the Undergraduate Graduation and Academic Appeal process

    • Students placed on a fourth suspension
  • Dropping Classes / Withdrawing from the University

    Dropping Classes

    During the course of a semester, students are permitted to drop individual courses within the permitted time frame yet still maintain enrollment in other courses. To drop all courses for a semester, or to drop down to zero hours, you must officially withdraw at the Wilson Advising Center. Deadlines for dropping individual courses, important dates and additional information regarding dropping/withdrawing can be found on the Registrar’s Web Page.

    Prior to the start of a semester, students wishing to discontinue enrollment at A-State may drop all classes through their Self-Service account. However, once the semester begins, tuition and certain fees or penalties may be assessed. Students will no longer have the ability to drop all classes (withdraw) through Self-Service. To drop all courses for a semester (withdraw), please contact the Wilson Advising Center at 870-972-3001 for instruction.     It is not always clear the effect of dropping courses or withdrawing may have on a student's status or eligibility for various services.
