+ SHOW

There was no gunman on campus.

Statement from Arkansas State University:

Numerous first responders from the University Police Department, Jonesboro Police Department, Craighead County Sheriff’s Office, Arkansas State Police and other law enforcement agencies worked swiftly and cooperatively this afternoon in response to what eventually turned out to be a false alarm on the campus.

Apparently students were filming a video project near the Union, and costumed actors were reported by other students to 911 as possible campus intruders. These students have been located and interviewed by University Police Officers. As a result, it has been confirmed that there was no gunman on campus.

The university immediately put a lockdown in place while the Union and surrounding areas were searched and cleared. The university’s text and email alert system was used to notify students about the situation.

Chancellor Tim Hudson, Vice Chancellor Rick Stripling, and other representatives of the university administration also responded to campus to assist in the crisis response. The university response plan worked perfectly as designed.

No injuries were reported, and normal campus operations have resumed.

The University Police Department will continue to closely monitor the campus this evening as a precautionary measure.

Chancellor Hudson expressed the university’s appreciation to all law enforcement personnel who responded so quickly to the perceived threat.

Psychology and Counseling

Students in class as ASU

The Department of Psychology & Counseling faculty are a diverse group with backgrounds including experimental and professional psychology, counseling, and rehabilitation. Our faculty are active in research and grant-writing, dedicated to teaching, and involved in professional organizations.

Resources for academic success

Psychology & Counseling Department offices, classrooms, and support facilities are conveniently located in the Education Building on the east side of campus. Faculty teach in "smart" classrooms that are capable of delivering multimedia instruction. We have a computer lab that supports both our courses and individual student projects. We also have an experimental psychology lab with support facilities.

The department has a clinic that is located on the first floor of the Education Building. The clinic has a group counseling room, six individual client rooms, and a play therapy room. All the counseling rooms include access to quality recording in order to conduct research, provide services, and training for counseling students. In addition to the counseling rooms there are multiple research labs for the psychology department to conduct their studies to produce innovative research in a multitude of areas.

The department maintains several faculty led laboratories for basic human and animal research, including the Animal Learning Lab, the Forensic and Applied Cognition in Society Lab, the Memory, Attention, and Perception Lab, and the Social Attitudes and Political Psychology Lab. The facilities were designed to meet the growing need, and demand, for hands-on laboratory and research experiences for students.   The designated facilities are equipped with the latest technology and are used in the investigation of a wide variety of research topics as well as in the supervision of students conducting independent research projects and honors theses.

Accreditations

Our department has programs accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Council on Rehabilitation Education, and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling Related Education Programs. In addition, the school psychology track in the ED.S. is approved by the Arkansas Department of Education and the National Association of School Psychologists.

Student Organizations

Our department has a variety of organizations that offer students a chance to be recognized for academic achievement, socialize, and increase their knowledge.
