Arkansas State Shooting Club claims State Championship; finishes third in Collegiate National Clay Target Championship

JONESBORO, Ark. — Arkansas State’s Red Wolves Shooting Sports Club extended its success on the range by recently winning the Academics, Integrity and Marksmanship (AIM) State Trap Championship in Lonoke.  

The Red Team defeated a strong field of youth shooters from across Arkansas. Junior Forrest Jones of Marion and sophomore Jordan Harper of Harrisburg were individual champions in the senior and junior shooting categories, respectively.

Earlier in the year, the Red Wolves finished third in American Trap at the 45th Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Collegiate National Championship at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas. The six-member squad picked up $16,000 in school endowments and individual scholarships, including participating as a team ($10,000), new school attending ($5,000) and Division 3 American Trap third place ($1,000).

At the Collegiate Nationals, the Red Wolves competed in Division 3 with 26 other universities. A total of 64 schools and 555 competitors participated overall. In men’s American trap, the Red Wolves squad scored 469 out of 500.   Jones and Harper each scored a 96, with Seth Pinkston of Jonesboro scoring a 95. Freshman Dylan Moon of Trumann scored a 94, senior James Wray of Payneway registered a 92 and Fletcher Dowell, a senior from Maumelle, scored 90.

The Red Wolves also finished third in American Skeet standings with Jones scoring 90, Harper with 88, Wray had 83, Moon with 82, Dowell 75 and Pinkston finished with 56. Two ASU shooters, Dowell and Wray, participated in the Sporting Clays with respective scores of 71 and 61.

Faculty Advisor and Head Coach Dr. Gauri Guha said, "The Red Wolves Shooting Sports squads are true champions. They win trophies and charm people wherever they go. They are great representatives for Arkansas State." 

Two Red Wolves squads (10 shooters) are headed to Sparta, Ill., August 3-6 for the 2013 AIM Grand National Championships.
