Two Red Wolf Battalion Cadets Commissioned as Army Second Lieutenants

JONESBORO -- The Department of Military Science conducted a formal commissioning ceremony Friday, Dec. 14, for two new Army second lieutenants, according to Lt. Col. Cecil L. Clark, professor of military science.

The commissioning ceremony was held in the newly opened Hall of Heroes in the Military Science Building on the ASU campus.  Col. James Treece of Beebe, deputy chief of staff, Arkansas Army National Guard, gave an inspirational address as guest speaker.  Treece is a College of Communications alumnus from ASU.

Christopher Van Leuvan of Hagarville (Johnson County), and Katryna J. Cardwell of Marion, a Harding University student who began the ROTC program while attending ASU-Beebe, were pinned with their second lieutenant bars.

Van Leuvan will be assigned to field artillery in the U. S. Army and Cardwell will be assigned to medical services in the Arkansas National Guard.

Van Leuvan's parents, who attended the ceremony, are Robert and Hope Van Leuvan.  Van Leuvan will graduate from ASU Saturday, Dec. 15, with a degree in business.

Cardwell's parents, who also attended, are 1st Lt. Kyndalin Mooney and 1st Lt. Donald Mooney, who are Army chaplains.  They live at Marion.

Immediately after the commissioning ceremony, the ASU ROTC Red Wolf Battalion hosted an open house to showcase the new Hall of Heroes.
