Dr. Jason Penry

The Vice Chancellor for University Advancement at Arkansas State University, Dr. Penry has served as the university’s project leader for the osteopathic medical school.

Dr. Tim Hudson

Since his Board of Trustees appointment as chancellor in 2012, Dr. Hudson has led a campus of dynamic faculty and staff toward the goal of establishing Arkansas State a destination university. Under his leadership, A-State has welcomed three consecutive undergraduate classes ranked as the most academically prepared in school history. His vision to enhance the value of A-State includes plans for public-private partnerships including the first American-style college campus in Querétaro, Mexico, and bringing a College of Osteopathic Medicine to Jonesboro, Ark., with the visionaries of New York Institute of Technology.

Dr. Barbara Ross-Lee

Barbara Ross-Lee, D.O., FACOFP is the Vice President for Health Sciences and Medical Affairs at the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Ross-Lee has an extensive background in health policy issues and serves as an advisor on primary care, medical education, minority health, women’s health and rural health care issues on the federal and state levels. Dr. Ross-Lee recently completed her appointment to the Institute of Medicine Consensus Committee on the Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education, which was responsible for recommending reforms to the GME system. Dr. Ross-Lee has lectured widely and published numerous scholarly articles on a variety of medical and health-care issues.

Mr. Paul Umbach

Paul Umbach is the Founder of Tripp Umbach, a nationally recognized private company providing research, planning, and economic analysis to many of the nation’s leading universities, hospitals, corporations, and governmental units. Paul has led more than 1,000 consulting assignments since 1988 – leading projects for 50 of the nation’s 100 best hospitals, 150 of the nation’s most respected universities, and more than 50 Fortune 500 corporations.

Ms. Angie Lockwood

As a Tripp Umbach Principal and Director of Communications of Tripp Umbach’s Baton Rouge office, Angie has completed various strategic planning, economic impact, and feasibility studies for clients throughout the United States. She has experience conducting projects for major hospitals and healthcare organizations, colleges and universities, including new and established medical school programs.

Ms. Denise Vandersal

Denise began her work with Tripp Umbach as an intern in 2008 while obtaining her graduate degree and continued to consult with the firm on numerous projects through 2011. Denise began working full-time at Tripp Umbach in the Spring of 2012. With her statistical background, Denise is active on the data side of a number of projects. Denise is now a Senior Project Director with the company.

Mr. Ray Hanley

Mr. Hanley joined the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care (AFMC) in 2010 and serves as President and Chief Executive Officer, overseeing the executive leadership team. Prior to leading AFMC, he spent 28 years with the Arkansas Department of Human Services, 16 of which were as director of Arkansas Medicaid. He then spent seven years as the client industry executive for the State Health and Human Services business aspect of HP, working exclusively outside the state of Arkansas. He has served as chair of the National Association of Medicaid Directors for a total of five years and remains an active alumnus of that association. He has also served as chair of the Central Arkansas Sierra Club and as a member of the American Public Welfare Association Board of Directors. He currently serves on the board of directors for the American Healthcare Quality Association. He is also the author or co-author of 18 Arkansas history books.

DR. DEBRA WEINSTEIN

Dr. Debra Weinstein is Vice President for Graduate Medical Education at the Partners Healthcare System in Boston and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She is also a Director of the MGH Institute for Health Professions, a former Director of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education, and a past-chair of the Massachusetts Medical Society’s Committee on Publications and the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Group on Resident Affairs. Dr. Weinstein chaired the 2011 Macy Foundation conference focused on reforming GME and was a member of the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on the Governance and Financing of GME. She is a recipient of the ACGME’s “Parker Palmer Courage to Lead Award” and serves as Deputy Editor of the journal Academic Medicine.

As chief public policy officer, Atul Grover, M.D., Ph.D., manages the health, educational, scientific, and other policies developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). He works with AAMC leadership to coordinate organizational strategy and external relationships to advance those policies and to carry out its mission of advancing the health of the public.

DR. FITZHUGH MULLAN

Dr. Mullan is the Murdock Head Professor of Medicine and Health Policy at the George Washington University. His research and policy work focus on US and international health workforce issues. His US work includes the W.K. Kellogg Foundation funded Beyond Flexner Study and the Josiah Macy Jr. funded Medical Education Futures Study. He is the Principal Investigator of the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Coordinating Center. He previously served as Principal Investigator of the Gates Foundation funded Sub-Saharan African Medical School Study (SAMSS).

U.S. REPRESENTATIVE RICK CRAWFORD, R-ARK.

As a U.S. Congressman, Rick serves on the House Agriculture Committee, where he is the Subcommittee Chairman on Livestock, Credit, and Rural Development Subcommittee. Rick is also honored to serve on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where he is Vice Chairman of the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee.

DR. NATHANIEL SMITH

As a member of Governor Mike Beebe’s cabinet, Dr. Nate Smith serves as director and state health officer of the Arkansas Department of Health. In this position, he provides senior scientific and executive leadership for the agency with more than 5,000 employees and a budget of more than $400 million delivering services throughout the state in more than 94 different locations.

DR. JOSEPH BATES

Joseph H. Bates trained in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. For many years he served as Vice Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at UAMS and Chief of Medicine at the Little Rock VA Hospital. In these rolls he was extensively involved in the education of residents in the various primary care disciplines. In addition he was part of the team that was responsible for the accreditation of the Internal Medicine Residency program and served for several years as a member of the Pulmonary Disease Subspecialty Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine. These experiences gave him insight into the accreditation process for achieving an approved residency training program and to the educational training needed to pass the American Board of Internal Medicine exam as well as its subspecialty examinations. Currently Dr. Bates serves as Deputy State Health Officer and Chief Science Officer for the Arkansas Department of Health and as Associate Dean and Professor of Epidemiology at the UAMS College of Public Health.

DR. JOHN BULGER

John B. Bulger, DO, MBA has been the Chief Quality Officer for the Geisinger Health System since 2011. Dr. Bulger founded Geisinger Medical Center’s hospitalist program in 1999 and lead the program’s development to include six hospitals and over 100 physicians and advanced practitioners. Dr. Bulger serves on regional and national groups aimed at improving the quality of medical care. These include: the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s standing workgroup on evaluation of its Quality Indicators™ and the National Quality Forum’s All-Cause Admissions and Readmissions Steering Committee. Dr. Bulger is a recognized leader in osteopathic medical education. He is a member of the American Osteopathic Association’s (AOA) Commission of College Accreditation (COCA), the national accrediting body for colleges of osteopathic medicine. He is a past chair of the AOA’s Program and Trainee Review Council - the national accrediting body for osteopathic graduate medical education. He holds appointments as a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and Regional Assistant Dean at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine.

DR. KENNETH HEILES

On May 14, 2014, Dr. Kenneth A. Heiles was named dean of the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education and the proposed Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Smith,AR. Immediately prior to this appointment, Dr. Heiles served as Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education at Lincoln Memorial University DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. Previously, Kenneth A. Heiles, DO, FACOFP dist. was in private practice in Star City, Arkansas. His professional focus was emergency medicine and osteopathic family medicine. Board certified in osteopathic family medicine, Dr. Heiles also served as Director of Osteopathic Medical Education at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Area Health Education Center –Pine Bluff, where he also served as the Osteopathic residency program director.

DR. BOYD BUSER

An AOA board-certified physician in osteopathic manipulative medicine and family medicine, Dr. Buser serves as the vice president for health affairs and dean of the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (UP-KYCOM). He also serves as professor of osteopathic principles and practice, and professor of family medicine at UP-KYCOM. Previously he served as the interim vice president and dean of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine, as well as associate dean for clinical affairs.

DR. THOMAS NASCA

Thomas J. Nasca, MD, MACP, Chief Executive Officer, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and Chief Executive Officer of ACGME International; Professor of Medicine (vol.), Jefferson Medical College. Dr. Nasca is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame with High Honors, is an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of Jefferson Medical College, completed his internship, residency, and was chief medical resident at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, and completed his nephrology fellowship at Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital.

MS. ADRIENNE WHITE-FAINES

In July 2013, Adrienne White-Faines, MPA, became Executive Director and CEO of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), which proudly represents its professional family of more than 104,000 osteopathic physicians (DOs) and osteopathic medical students. In this position, White-Faines is in charge of carrying out the AOA’s strategic agenda supporting the organization’s physician and student members and its commitment to promoting public health; advancing scientific research; and serving as the accrediting agency for osteopathic medical schools, hospitals and health care facilities.
