A-State Closed on Jan. 16 due to winter precipitation.

Arkansas State University is closed today, Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to winter precipitation. All winter response staff members are requested to report to their duty stations.

Overnight, snow fall made conditions for students, faculty and staff hazardous.

"Our administrative team determined the snowfall was going to be heavier than forecast and while today was scheduled to be the first day of class for the spring 2018 semester, I've decided it is best that we cancel classes for today," Chancellor Kelly Damphousse said.

All classes at the Jonesboro and Paragould locations are cancelled. Online classes continue.

While offices and classes are closed, university residential life areas continue to operate to support the on-campus student population.

Important Updates

  • The American Spiritual Ensemble will perform at Fowler Center's Riceland Hall tonight at 7:30pm.
  • For students living on-campus, Acansa Dining Hall will operate under "brunch hours" with service from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and then 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • ETS testing candidates that were scheduled for today should contact the Testing Center in the Reng Student Union at 972-2038 when A-State reopens and they will assist with rescheduling.
  • The Red WOLF Center will open today on winter weather hours of noon until 5 p.m.
  • Dean B. Ellis Library is closed all day today.

ASU’s Continuing Education and Community Outreach program to present projects during February


JONESBORO, Ark. — February is a busy month for Arkansas State University’s Continuing Education and Community Outreach (CECO) program that is offering several valuable and fun project events throughout the month.

For those who are interested in starting a business, “Preparing a Business Plan” will be presented Feb. 18, 25, March 4 and 11 from 5:30-7 p.m. in Room 301 in the Business Building, 2007 Aggie Road. Cost is $59 and Dr. Philip Tew, assistant professor finance, will present the seminar.

One of the most important success tools for a new business is preparing a business plan.  This is the document that brings organization to your ideas and the many areas new business owners often fail to recognize.  A good business plan is also often critical to securing funding for new business ventures.

In “Knitting for Beginners,” get started with a simple project that teaches basic stitches, how to read a pattern, how to select the right yarn and the appropriate tools to use.  This class meets twice a week for three weeks (Feb. 18, 21, 25, 28, March 4 and 7) to allow beginners to learn under skilled supervision to make their first project easy and fun.  Knitting is a great hobby with the versatility of creating a variety of pieces.

The class, taught by Marian Peeler, costs $49 and will be held in the Eugene Smith Building, Room 205, 106 North Caraway Road.

Students should bring a pair of straight knitting needles sizes 6, 7, 8 or 9 on the first night.

“How to Make Homemade Cinnamon Rolls” will be Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 6-8 p.m. in the Eugene Smith Building, Room 205. Cost of the event is $25 and the instructor is Barbara Dwyer. There is a 20-student limit.

Students will watch a demonstration of handling methods, then make their own cinnamon rolls under skilled supervision.  Learn a tried and successful way to combine recipe ingredients, mix and work with dough, roll, shape and assemble rolls for baking success.  Students will learn every step of the process from preparing batter and handling dough to the oven ready product.  Recipe and icing are included.  

To close out the month, CECO is hosting “Cake Decorator’s Lab for Beginners” Tuesday, Feb. 26 through Tuesday, March 26. The class will be held in the Eugene Smith Building, Room 205, from 6-7:30 p.m. Cost is $49 with supplies included. The instructor is Sherry Lindley.

No previous experience is required for this class. The labs are divided into different skills with the Feb. 26 lab devoted to learning to make roses, daisies, grass, baby’s breath and leaves. March 5 offers cake layout, drawing, fill-ins, lettering and other useful tips. Cake shapes, pans, cutting, leveling and themes are the subjects of the March 12 lab. The final March 26 lab teaches stacking, tiered cakes, designs and royal icing.
