Patel Awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Raj N. Patel, a senior Honors student in interdisciplinary studies at Arkansas State University, is one of more than 250 American undergraduate students from 140 colleges and universities selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) to study or intern abroad.

Weekend Storms Bring Minor River Flooding Conditions

After a line of weekend storms moving through the area, 3 rivers in the KASU listening area have been placed under a flood warning until Wednesday.The Associated Press reports forecasters said residents of Independence, Jackson, and Lawrence counties could be affected by the flooding of the Black River at Black Rock.  Sunday morning, the river was reported to be a little over 15 feet at minor flood stage; just about 1 foot above its 14 feet flood stage.

Alderman Candidates Propose Solutions to Jonesboro's Biggest Issues

A-State Selects Dr. Carl Cates as Dean of New College

Arkansas State University is appointing Dr. Carl Cates of Valdosta State University to be the first dean of a newly structured college that combines programs in the fine arts, humanities, social sciences, media and communication.Cates currently is associate dean of the College of the Arts at the Georgia institution where he has served on faculty and in academic leadership roles for the past 23 years.

GW Communications bringing 28 jobs to Paragould

A Texas-based communications company is opening in Paragould.  The Arkansas Economic Development Commission made the announcement today. GW Communications will operate an office at 1707 Linwood Drive and will employ 28 people.  The new jobs will include computer operator positions and CAD Drafting.  According to the news release, GW Communications provides broadband services to telecommunications, cable, and other industries.

St. Bernards Welcomes Pediatrician Dr. Justin Yancey to Staff

 St. Bernards has announced the addition of pediatrician Doctor Justin Yancey to the medical staff. According to St. Bernard’s press release, Yancey will be working with the hospital to develop the pediatric hospitalist program. The West Helena native will also work with students of the New York Institute of Technology D.O. medical school at his Alma Mater of Arkansas State University, which is set to open in the fall.

All five candidates for the Ward 6, position 1, vacancy on the Jonesboro City Council will participate Thursday in a public forum sponsored by the City of Jonesboro. Craighead Co. April Sales Tax Revenue in Double Digits

Craighead County joins cities such as Fayetteville and Rogers in recording double digit revenue increases for April. The Jonesboro Sun reports a 14% increase in county sales tax revenue this month compared to last April.  County officials say the county’s 1% sales tax brought in over $1.6 million in April. Jonesboro saw a 13% increase in its sales tax revenue which equates to more than $1.3 million . Sales tax collections across Arkansas were up by 7.8%, according to the state Department of Finance and Administration.

UPDATE: Caraway Placed Under Boil Order

Caraway is no longer under a boil order. (5/2/16)The City of Caraway is under a boil order today. KAIT-TV reports the city superintendent placed the city under the order after police reported water spilling onto the street.  Water samples are being sent to the health department lab in Paragould for analysis. Results are expected in about 24 hours.

Craighead Co. Sheriff Warns of "COPS for Kids" Scam

  The Craighead County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of a charity scam in the area. KAIT-TV reports Sheriff Marty Boyd sent an email Monday warning of a man contacting local businesses on behalf of the Arkansas Sheriff’s Association.  The scammer says the money is for the “COPS for Kids” program which goes to support 2 kids in Bay.
