Three Engineering Programs Achieve ABET Reaccreditation

10/07/2019

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University’s bachelor’s degree programs in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering have been reaccredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.

ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

“Arkansas State has a long history working with ABET to maintain high standards in our engineering program,” Chancellor Kelly Damphousse said.  “We know from local and regional industry leaders how important quality graduates in these engineering fields are to our future, and we hope to expand our programs to meet an increasing demand.”

“We are very thankful for receiving reaccreditation and that outcome is an immediate validation of what I realized as an incoming dean – the college has outstanding engineering programs and outstanding faculty that have been serving the region for many years. A measure of the faculty’s commitment is that they have gone to work right away planning for ABET’s next visit several years from now,” Dr. Abhijit Bhattacharyya, dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, said.

“It is my pleasure to congratulate the entire engineering faculty, the college point of lead on the ABET effort, Dr. Paul Mixon, the program directors – Mr. Jason Stewart (civil), Dr. Shubhalaxmi Kher (electrical) and Dr. Shivan Haran (mechanical) – and my predecessor, Dean Tim Burcham, under whose leadership the entire effort was managed, leading up to reaccreditation.”

Sought worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision, and safety are of the utmost importance.

Developed by technical professionals from ABET’s member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews look at program curricula, faculty, facilities, and institutional support and are conducted by teams of highly skilled professionals from industry, academia, and government, with expertise in the ABET disciplines.

ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization with ISO 9001:2015 certification. It currently accredits 4,005 programs at over 793 colleges and universities in 32 countries.
