08/30/2018

JONESBORO – The Department of Music at Arkansas State University will present cellist Jiaze Ma Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

Ma will be joined by Dr. Lauren Schack Clark, piano, and Dr. Chi Young Song, violin, both faculty members in the A-State Department of Music.  Admission is free.

Born into a musical family in China, he became the principal cellist of Shenzhen Experimental School Symphony Orchestra as well as Shenzhen Senior High School Orchestra.  Ma toured with the orchestra in France, Italy, Austria, Macao and Taiwan.

Recipient of the Edmund Builkolt String Scholarship and Francescbi-Stoll Scholarship, Ma studied with Dr. Lawrence Leviton and Dr. Cheng-Hou Lee at the University of Wisconsin and Northern Illinois University.

He studied for his Master of Music degree under Belgian cellist Thomas Landschoot at Arizona State University School of Music, where he was also awarded the Special Talent Scholarship.

Currently, Ma is a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts in cello performance at College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati.  As the teaching assistant of world-renowned cellist Yehuda Hanani, he participates in teaching and also coordinates the cello studio and various events.

On the program are works by Handel-Halvorson, Manuel Ponce-Heifetz and Astor Piazzolla, along with two Traditional Chinese Folk Songs, and the Brahms Piano Trio No. 1 in B Major.  Ma will be joined by his girlfriend, Xiangyuan Huang, violin, for the Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia.

While touring China in 2015, Clark performed a recital and taught master classes at Shenzhen University, where Ma’s mother, Hua Min, a pianist and chair of the piano department, was her host.  Hua Min is also the godmother of Clark’s former graduate student, Bijia Wang.
