Fowler Center Announces 2019-20 Performance Season

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University’s Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Drive, is announcing the lineup of performances in its 2019-20 Fowler Series, according to Dr. Marika Kyriakos, director of Fowler Center.

The season offers diverse entertainment beginning with the Native Pride Dancers on Sept. 6. October is a busy month with Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, all the way from India, on Oct. 1, Huntertones on Oct. 8, and ukulelist Jake Shimabukuro on Oct. 25.  The fall lineup closes with the Juilliard String Quartet on Nov. 22.

The season continues in the spring with the return of The Muses and their “Celtic Spring” Concert. For the final concert, A’lante Flamenco dance ensemble will perform on April 10.

Dr. Tim Crist, who oversaw the Fowler Series during the 2018-19 year, arranged for this year’s lineup, Kyriakos added.

Here is a brief description of the various presentations this season.

  • Native Pride Dancers featuring Larry Yazzie, Friday, Sept. 6, at 7:30 p.m. – Feel the beat of the drum, experience the hypnotizing power of dance, and enjoy the rhythm of the music as the Native Pride Dancers and musicians share the cultural history, traditions, ways, beliefs and spiritual importance of Indigenous peoples.

  • Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 7:30 p.m. – One of the premier Indian Classical dance ensembles performing today, Nrityagram Dance Ensemble has the unprecedented distinction of making The New York Times’ “Best Dance of the Year” list two consecutive years in a row. Their daily life of intensive training and meditation brings to the stage compelling captivating performances that are at once sensual and lyrical.

  • Huntertones, Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m. – Huntertones brings people together around the globe with fun, imaginative and fearless music. Their high energy, horn-driven sound fuses inspired improvisation and adventurous composition melding jazz, funk, rock and soul.

  • Jake Shimabukuro, Friday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. – One of the hottest tickets around, Jake Shimabukuro’s wholly unique approach to the ukulele started at a young age in Honolulu, Hawaii. Early on, Jake’s YouTube clip of his original take on George Harrison’s love ballad, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ went viral. What followed were appearances on programs such as The Today Show, A Prairie Home Companion and many more.

  • The Juilliard String Quartet, Friday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m. – With unparalleled artistry and enduring vigor, the Juilliard String Quartet continues to inspire audiences around the world. Hailed by the Boston Globe as “the most important American quartet in history,” the Juilliard draws on a deep and vital engagement to the classics, while embracing the mission of championing new works, a vibrant combination of the familiar and the daring.

  • The Muses “Celtic Spring” Concert, Tuesday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. – The Muses invite their audience to divert the mind, and stimulate creative musings. Their vision is to inspire, educate, heal and delight their audiences by providing diverse expressions of classical art and educational enrichment opportunities to all of the citizens of Arkansas.

  • A’lante Flamenco, Friday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. – A’lante Flamenco Ensemble, based in Austin, Texas, excites audiences with a blend of traditional and contemporary flamenco music and dance. A’lante Flamenco was formed with the objective of presenting flamenco to Texas and regional audiences in the freshest and most creative way possible. A’lante Flamenco’s work aims to reach audiences on a visceral level, provoking emotional responses through music and dance that cross cultural and linguistic boundaries.
