Fall 2013 Writers’ Retreat to be Held Nov. 4-8 at Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center in Piggott


JONESBORO, Ark. — The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center (HPMEC) in Piggott has announced dates for its Fall 2013 Writers’ Retreat. The retreat will be held Monday through Friday, Nov. 4-8, in the Educational Center and the Hemingway Barn-Studio in Piggott and will offer writers the opportunity to work under the direction of a professional mentor.

Registration is $200 by October 11 and $225 thereafter; lunch and breaks are included. Teachers interested in in-service opportunities associated with the retreat should contact the museum.

Writer Andrea Hollander who will serve as mentor for the retreat. She is the author of four full-length poetry collections, including Landscape with Female Figure: New and Selected Poems, Woman in the Painting, The Other Life, and House Without a Dreamer, which won the Nicholas Roerich Poetry Prize.

Other honors include a 2013 Oregon Literary Fellowship, a Pushcart Prize for prose memoir, the D. H. Lawrence Fellowship, the Runes Poetry Prize, two poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and two from the Arkansas Arts Council. Her poems and essays have appeared in numerous anthologies, college textbooks, and literary journals.

For 22 years she served as the Writer-in-Residence at Lyon College where she was awarded the Lamar Williamson Prize for Excellence in Teaching. She lives in Portland, Ore., where she teaches workshops at the Attic Institute and Mountain Writers Series. Hollander will hold a reading of her own work at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7. This reading is free and open to the public.

Writers' retreats are structured to be interactive with group activities, private writing time, and mentoring. Writers contribute stories, poems, and essays to be published on-site in a spiral-bound souvenir anthology for each participant.
