Arkansas High School Students Win Awards At 79th Annual A-State Communication Day

JONESBORO –– Greene County Tech High School won the top overall sweepstakes award at the 79^th annual A-State Communication Day for Arkansas high school students Saturday at Arkansas State University. Watson Chapel High School placed second, Cave City High School came in third and Armorel High School took fourth.

A total of 102 students competed in 28 different contests in areas of broadcast and print journalism, public relations, advertising, social media, narrative filmmaking, photojournalism, sports, debate, extemporaneous speaking and more. Students competed for first, second, third and honorable mention prizes. The school accumulating the highest number of points for the day, Greene County Tech, won the sweepstakes plaque.

All the winners were announced at an afternoon ceremony at the campus. The list containing names of all the winners is attached below.

Representatives of the Departments of Media and Communication that jointly organized the event said they were happy with this year’s turnout and already looked forward to next year’s competitions.

“This year’s event was one of the best ever. The high school students who participated in our different competitions showed great character, composure and desire for excellence. We are grateful to their school, counselors and them for taking the time to come and visit us. We are hopeful that some or all of them will choose to continue their media education with us, after high school,” said Media Department Chair Dr. Osabuohien Amienyi.

“We are happy that so many area high school students participated in Communication Day at A-State. It is inspiring to see so many talented students interested in communication. We are pleased with this year’s turnout and look forward to meeting even more students at next year’s Communication Day,” said Communication Department Chair Dr. Marceline Hayes. The Departments of Media and Communication at A-State offer a number of programs in strategic communication, multimedia journalism, creative media production and communication studies to prepare students for professional and academic careers.
