A-State Resumes Regular Operations Tuesday, Dec. 10

12/09/2013

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University resumes regular operations Tuesday, Dec. 10.  All offices are expected to reopen on time Tuesday along with regularly scheduled final exams.

A-State closed from Friday, Dec. 6, through Monday, Dec. 9, due to a heavy winter mix that left roads and surfaces across the region covered with thick ice.  A rise in temperatures coupled with the work of university staff to removed and reduce the ice across campus made the reopening possible.

“We want to thank our Facilities Management staff who have worked tirelessly since Friday applying de-icing materials and plowing parking lots, streets and sidewalks to make the campus as safe as possible,” Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Len Frey said.  “We also recognize our residential life and food service staff for continuing to provide services during the campus closure.”

Final exams resume, and rescheduled finals continue on Wednesday and Thursday.  Finals originally scheduled for Friday, Dec. 6, will be conducted on Wednesday, Dec. 11.  Finals set for Monday, Dec. 9, are rescheduled for Thursday, Dec. 12.

To accommodate students with rescheduled finals, the fall semester checkout time for residence halls was moved to noon on Friday, Dec. 13.

Students with questions regarding final exams are urged to communicate directly with their instructors.

“We know the weather has made this a more difficult final exam period, and we appreciate everyone’s patience – both students and faculty – in working through these changes,” Provost Lynita Cooksey said.  “If you are concerned about your ability to travel in for a final exam, please don’t travel if you feel unsafe and contact your instructor for options.”

Fall Commencement remains unchanged for this Saturday, Dec. 14, as Arkansas State welcomes the Governor of Queretaro, Mexico, Jose Eduardo Calzada Rovirosa, as the commencement speaker.

Gov. Calzada is the first foreign elected official to address Arkansas State’s graduates, and leads one of Mexico’s most progressive states.  Home to the nation’s high tech sector, Queretaro is among the top automotive, aviation and entrepreneurial centers in Mexico and ranks first in livability according to a recent quality of life study of all Mexican cities.

In early 2014, Arkansas State and private investors in Queretaro will break ground on the first U.S. university residential branch campus in Mexico.
